Q1. a) State the benefits of using Type 2 Hypervisor Virtualisation software in your
design. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the VirtualBox platform used
in your network
Typically, a Type-2 Hypervisor runs on the operating system of the physical host machine.
Thus, it operates by creating another layer on the host’s OS in enabling visualization (Kurose
2013). As a consequence, working on Type-2 Hypervisor accrues the following benefits:
 Simplicity in Management: Unlike in Type-1 Hypervisors, Type-2 Hypervisors act as
management consoles on which all operations of the virtual machine are done. This
eliminates the need to install separate software packages for managing virtual machines
configured for type-2 hypervisors.
 Availability of numerous vendors: Most type-2 hypervisors are custom made for easy
download and configuration from the internet. Primarily, the hypervisors are Oracle
VirtualBox or VMware based.
 Convenient for use in various environments: Type-2 hypervisors can be conveniently
configured on various OSs and user environments such as Linux, Windows, or even on
the cloud.

Strengths of VirtualBox
 OS portability: Oracle’s VirtualBox can easily be configured for use in multiple OS in the
same computer. Thus, the user has more freedom to define and allocate hardware usage
during configuration (Desmond et al 2013).
 Multi-hardware support: Latest VirtualBox versions support current and past (often
obsolete) hardware, making it easy for almost everyone to use it.
 Easy to test and evaluate: Unlike a conventional OS, Oracle’s VirtualBox take minimal
space to configure and use. As a consequence, users can easily test its usefulness without
the need for additional storage capacity, or uninstalling existing OS.

Weaknesses of VirtualBox
 Dependent on host machine: Unlike a real machine which can operate independently, the
VirtualBox is dependent on the host. Thus, the faster and powerful the host, the more
efficient the resulting virtual machine.
 Less efficient than host. Certain user defined functions in VirtualBox have to be
periodically approved by the host machine before being executed.

Q1. b) Explain with use of diagrams the significance of the following terms, Active
Directory Forests, Trees, Parent and Child Domains.
Surname 2

An Active Directory Forest refers to the top most logical container/layer in an Active
Directory configuration. It contains various usability functions such as domains, computers,
group policies and users.

A tree refers to a collection of domains sharing a contiguous namespace. A domain directly

located in the namespace tree under another domain is called the child domain. The primary
domain housing the child domain is thus called the parent domain.

Q1. c) Investigate and document the main roles and responsibilities of an Active
Directory Domain Controller

Q1. b) What actions could we take in the event of a Domain Controller becoming
unavailable
