Transmission Charging Pump Pressure - Test

When testing and adjusting the transmission and power train, move the
machine to an area clear of obstructions, with safe exhaust ventilation
for the exhausts. Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil
under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To
prevent possible injury, do the procedure that follows before testing and
adjusting the transmission and power train.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during


performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Before you begin the test, refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation
for Troubleshooting".

1. Operate the machine until the transmission oil is at an operating temperature of 51 °C (124 °F).

2. Stop the machine. Engage the parking brake and turn off the engine.

3. Attach 8T-0856 Pressure Gauge (0 to 6,000 kPa (0 to 870 psi)) to test port (1) on the oil filter.

4. Start the engine. Set the throttle control to high idle. Turn the differential lock to the ON
position . Refer to Table 2 for the correct transmission oil pressure. Record the gauge reading in
Table 3.

5. Operate the engine at low idle and repeat Step 1 through Step 4. If it is necessary to adjust the
transmission oil pressure, proceed to Step 6. If it is not necessary to adjust the transmission oil
pressure, remove the test equipment.

6. Turn off the engine. Loosen nut (2). Turn screw (3) clockwise in order to increase the
transmission oil pressure. Turn screw (3) counterclockwise in order to reduce the pressure
setting. Screw (3) will alter the pressure setting 283 kPa (41 psi) per turn.

7. Tighten nut (2). Repeat Step 1 through Step 5 in order to recheck the transmission oil pressure.

Note: Replace the pump if the low pressure can not be corrected by adjusting the relief valve. Repair
parts for the pump are available, but Caterpillar recommends replacing the pump.
