Lesson Plan: Ser vs.

Estar & Vocab

○ Students will be assessed on their restaurant vocabulary. Students will 
have to identify restaurant items and words that identify people. This 
assessment will show their understanding of these words.

Instructional Sequence: 

Engagement/Hook  Warm Up- Students will complete a warm similar to the Ser 
vs. Estar with Vocab activity they completed at the end of the 
last class period. They will practice deciding between ser and 
estar using the vocabulary they have been practicing.  

Exploration  Famous People- students will work on this activity with a 


partner. They will decide together on eight famous people 
they want to talk about. Students will then fill out the form 
individually about whether the statement is true for that 
famous person or not. Students will then talk with their 
partner about their answers and see if they answered the 
same.  

Explanation  Review Vocabulary Slides- as a class we will go over the 


powerpoint with all the vocabulary words and repeat all the 
words so students get comfortable saying the words and 
recognizing what the word means in Spanish. 

Extension  Memory Game- students will practice their vocabulary by 


playing a memory game with a partner. There will be 
vocabulary cards with the words in Spanish and English. 
Students will have the cards flipped over and they will turn 
over to cards at a time and try to match them up.  
 
Las analogias- students will work on acquiring the vocab 
words by comparing and contrasting the vocabulary words. 
This will take the understanding of the vocabulary words to a 
higher level of thinking. 
 
Slap It- Students will use the same cards for the memory 
game for this game. Students will slap the card that 
corresponds to the appropriate word said aloud. I will say a 
word in English or a definition in Spanish and students will 
compete with their partner to hit the corresponding word 
first.  
 
En el restaurante- Students will practice their vocabulary by 
matching the sentences of the waiter with the two young 
people in the restaurant. This will help students understand 
the vocabulary in context. It will give them an opportunity to 
practice the vocabulary in an actual context.  

Evaluation  Vocab Quiz Restaurant- Students will be assessed on their 


restaurant vocabulary. Students will have to identify 
restaurant items and words that identify people. This 
assessment will show their understanding of these words.  
 
Differentiation: 

● Students are able to have as much or as little time as they want to work on all 
the activities.  
 
Extensions: 

● If students finish the En el restaurante or Las analogias activities, they can 


play more rounds of the memory game.
