Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of an object or substance.


A thermometer is used to measure the temperature of an object or substance.
There are two types of thermometers—the laboratory thermometer and the clinical
thermometer.
A laboratory thermometer is used to measure air temperature and the
temperature of other substances while a clinical thermometer is used to measure body
temperature. The normal body temperature is 37o.
The freezing point of water is O°C. The freezing point of water is when it turns to
ice. The boiling point of water is 100°C. If the temperature of water is near 0°C, the water
is cold. On the other hand, if the temperature of water is near to 100°C, then it is hot.

Temperature can be measured using the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales.


To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, just remember the formula below:

°F = 1.8 (°C) + 32

To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, just remember the formula below:

ELECTRICITY

The measurement units for power rating is the watt (W) and the kilowatt
(kW).
♦ 1,000 watts = 1 kilowatt
Electric power consumption is the amount of electric energy that an appliance
consumes within a certain period of time.
Power rating × Time used = Electric consumption
♦ The measurement unit for electric power consumption is the kilowatt-hour
(kW-h).
♦ Electric power consumption is computed by subtracting the previous meter
reading from the present meter reading.
The basic charge or generation charge is the cost of the electric company’s
purchase of electricity from NAPOCOR passed on to customers.
The currency adjustment is the charge for price fluctuations between the
Philippine peso against the US dollar.
♦ The power purchase adjustment or distribution charge is the cost of the electric
company’s distribution of electricity to a certain region.

A line graph or line chart is a type of chart which displays information as a series of


data points called 'markers' connected by straight line segments. It is a basic type of
chart common in many fields.

Title - tells what information is being displayed, and is often at the top of the
graph.
Scale - usually located along the left-hand side of the graph and contains
numbers in even increments. The numbers may be separated by twos, fives,
tens, or hundreds.
Data Points – each data point is lined up with label and value on the scale.

Steps in Plotting a Line Graph


Step 1: Find the range in values.
Step 2: Determine a Scale.
Step 3: Label the graph.
Step 4: Plot the points and connect them.
Step 5: Give the graph a title. 

Example 1: The table below shows Jill's math scores in secondary school (grades 7
through 12). Construct a line graph to visually display this data.

Step 1: Find the range in values.

There are two sets of values. What units are used? What is the greatest value and the
least value for the first set? What is the greatest value and the least value for the second
set?
The units are grade level and math score (%). The grade level ranges from 7 to 12 and
the math score ranges from 72 to 91.

Step 2: Determine a Scale.

Start with the horizontal scale. If you are using graph paper, let 1 unit on the graph paper
equal 1 unit of the values you are graphing. Determine whether the greatest value will fit
on the graph. If it doesn't, then change the scale and try again. Now repeat this process
for the vertical scale. 

The vertical scale must start at 0. So the vertical scale will range from 0 to 100.

Mark each unit across the horizontal scale and along the vertical scale. Label the marks
by the units they represent.

Step 4: Plot the points and connect them.

Plot a point for each pair of values. Which item of a pair is indicated by the horizontal

Solve daily life problem involving ratio.

Remember This:
Ratio is the spoken language of arithmetic. It is away of comparing two or more
quantities having the same units- the quantities may be separate entities or they may be
different parts of the whole.
We can write the ratio of x and y in three ways:
.word form ------------------ x is to y
colon form ----------------- x:y
fraction form --------------- x/y
Ratio must be expressed in simplest form, which means that terms are relatively
prime to each other.

Example 1. If there are 24 boys and 16 girls in a class, then, the ratio of the boys to the
girls is 24 is to 16 and the ratio of the girls to the boys is 16 is to 24. In the ratio 24 is to
16, the first term is 24 and the second term is 16. It may also be written as 24:16 or
24/16. Even if the ratio is in fractional form, we say twenty four is to sixteen. Since the
ratio is not yet in its simplest form, we can express it as: 24 = 3 x 8 = 3

The order in which the ratio is expressed is important. Therefore, the order of
terms in a ratio must be correspond to the ratio of objects being compared.
In a ratio, a part can be compared to its whole.
In the preceding example, the ratio of the number of boys to the total number
of students is 24 is to 40 and the ratio of the number of girls to the total number of
students is 16 is to 40.
If we compare the part to the total, the ratio of the part to the total has the
same meaning as a fraction.

Example 2. Compare the number of vowels to consonant and vice versa in the word
ARITHMETIC, in word, colon, and fraction form.
Solutions:

Consonants ----------------------C, H, M, R, and T-----5
Ratio of vowels to consonants;
Word form--------------- 3 is to 5
Colon form-------------- 3:5
Fraction form----------- 3/5
Ratio of consonants to vowels:

Example 3. Express the ratio of two 50-centavo coins to Php 4.00 in colon form.
Solutions:
Make sure that the two quantities have the same units. Php 4.00 may consist of
8-centavo coins. So, express the ratio of the two quantities as 2:8. In simplest form is
1:4.
• Remember: The ratio of two quantities has NO unit of measure.

Example 4. Write 4 ratios equivalent to 5/7 .


Solutions:
5 x 2 = 10 5 x 3 = 15 5 x 4 = 20 5 x 5 = 25
7 x 2 14 7 x 3 21 7 x 4 28 7 x 5 35
Therefore , 10/14 , 15/21, 20/28, and 25/35 are ratios equivalent to 5/7.

Note: There are instances when the terms of the ratio do not have the same units or
classifications. For example, 50 kilometers to an hour or 50 kilometer per hour. This
special ratio is called rate.

Example 5. Alvin scored 192 points in 8 basketball games. Express in lowest terms, the
average rate of the number of points that Alvin scored in every game.
Solutions:
Rate = 192 points = 24 points = 24 points/game

A proportion is a statement of equality between two ratios. Each part of a
proportion is a term. The first and the last terms are called extremes while the second
and the third terms are called means
