Video Summary on Emotional Health
Emotional health, a concept synonymous with wellbeing, is vital to living a life of
wholeness, balance, and contentment. It can be thought of as an extension of mental health;
it’s the “optimal functioning” end of the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make up both
our inner and outer worlds. It includes an overall experience of wellness in what we think,
feel, and do through both the highs and lows of life. Improving emotional health is similar to
improving physical health. It transcends the notion of mere freedom from illness to involve
actively feeling well and living well.
The video that was showed to us in class, titled “How to practice emotional first aid”
basically discusses the importance of emotional health and what we should do when we are
suffering from emotional pain. There are several points that the speaker pointed out in the
video regarding emotional aid. The first is one is to take action when feeling lonely.
Basically, let people close to you know when something is bothering you. Keeping feelings
of sadness or anger inside adds to stress. Just like the speaker in the video, when he feels that
he is lonely or sad, he finds ways to make himself happy. He also speaks about changing our
response to failures. In short it’s basically staying positive. When we are faced with certain
problems or failures, we have to focus on the good things in life and to also forgive others for
making mistakes. Through this, it would make us more emotionally healthy and it would
make us feel better in life knowing that good things will come to us.
Another important point is to always protect our self-esteem. Always be aware of
your emotions and reactions. Notice what in your life makes you sad, frustrated, or angry.
Try to address or change those things. Figure out what it is important to you in life, and focus
on that. As a quote in the video mentioned, “break a negative cycle before it begins”. This
reminds us, once again, that we shouldn’t let negativity surround our life and appreciate the
things that we are blessed with from God.
Last but not least always remember that emotional health takes work. It involves
attending to and fine-tuning thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The benefits of creating and
maintaining wellbeing, though, are well worth the effort. Defining and living your emotional
health leads to positive change and personal growth, a healthy sense of confidence, a peaceful
sense of healing and recovery from mental health challenges, and a sense of hope.
