Chapter III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter includes the methodology of research study including the schools

conducted, study design, sampling used, selection of respondents and collection of data.

Locale of the Study

This study will be conducted in Lucena City National High School, located at

Purok Baybayin Ibabang Dupay Lucena City.

Research Design

This study will use descriptive design of research. Descriptive research can be

explained as a statement of affairs as they are at present with the researcher having no

control over variable. Descriptive research is “aimed at casting light on current issues or

problems through a process of data collection that enables them to describe the situation

more completely than was possible without employing this method.”

In its essence, descriptive studies are used to describe various aspects of the

phenomenon. In its popular format, descriptive research is used to describe characteristics

and/or behavior of sample population. Three main purposes of descriptive studies can be

explained as describing, explaining and validating research findings. Ethridge, D.E.

(2004).
Population and Sampling

This study will use the Purposive sampling. Purposive sampling (also known as

judgment, selective or subjective sampling) is a sampling technique in which researcher

relies on his or her own judgment when choosing members of population to participate in

the study. It is a non-probability sampling method and it occurs when “elements selected

for the sample are chosen by the judgment of the researcher. Researchers often believe

that they can obtain a representative sample by using a sound judgment, which will result

in saving time and money”.

Alternatively, purposive sampling method may prove to be effective when only

limited numbers of people can serve as primary data sources due to the nature of research

design and aims and objectives. Black, K. (2010).

Instrumentation

The instruments in this study are researcher-made survey. The survey will be

designed in the way that it shall meet the main objectives of the study which is to

determine the perceived influence of students learning of hands-on activities.

The survey material is divided into three parts. Part 1 is for the collection of

information on personal data of respondents including teachers Educational Attainment,

Length of service, Seminars attended related to TVL-EIM NC’s taken and passed, Part 2

consists of questions that will show hands-on activities employed in the class while Part 3

is about perceived influence of hands-on activities.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will make a letter to Lucena City National High School (LCNHS) to

let them conduct for their study, Perceived Influence of Hands-on Activities on Students

Learning of Senior High School Students in Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Track -

Electrical Installation and Maintenance. The letter is signed by the researchers noted by

their adviser Dr. Nona D. Nagares and the Campus Director Dr. Frederick T. Villa. The

researchers go next to Lucena City National High School to get the number of enrollees

in Senior High School – Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Track major in EIM. The

researchers go to the principal’s office to get the data needed and the secretary of Mr.

Inojosa the principal of LCNHS give the list of students enrolled in SHS- TVL major in

EIM. The researchers go to the SHS Building and bring the letter signed by the secretary

to request for the students enrolled in SHS-TVL major in EIM to answer the

questionnaire.

Statistical Treatment

Frequency and Percentage

P= (f/n) x 100%

Where:

P- Percentage

f- Frequency

n- No. of respondents
The formula that will be used to find mean.

WM= ∑fw/n

Where:

WM- weighted mean

fw- sum of the total products weighted frequency and the weight

n- no. of respondents

Scale used in computation of mean and average weighted means

Weighted Points Range of weighted means Interpretation

4 3.27 – 4.00 Always
3 2.57 – 3.26 Often
2 1.75 – 2.50 Sometimes
1 1.00 – 1.74 Never
