What’s it like to work on your skills with the guidance Meged (at left), took some time to come up to Glasgow
of a world champion? Just ask the Cornwell and Klind and work with some young local ropers, Jack Cornwell,

Born on February 16th, 1998
in Miles City, Haven Meged won
his first tie-down roping world
championship with an incredible
run in his first Wranglers National
Finals Rodeo at the Thomas and
Mack Center in Las Vegas.
He placed in five rounds and
won the average with a time of
85.7 seconds on 10 head, earning
$126,135 and the gold buckle. His
2019 PRCA career earnings were
$246,013, good for the world title
and another gold buckle.

career, following high school

 Action for Eastern Montana Head Start program will be having
enrollment -it is now open for the 2020-2021 upcoming school year.
It is a free pre-school program-no tuitions and no fees. The program runs five
days a week Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.
To enroll in the program children must be
1. Three or four years of age by September 10th, 2020
2. Meet the income guidelines. a. he program can enroll 10% of the children
that exceed the income guideline slots. b. 10% of the slots are made
available for children with a disability.
While eligibility is based on income guidelines, families that receive certain
benefits and circumstances are eligible as well. Glasgow is a comprehensive
child development pre-school program serving children ages 3-4 and their
families. It is designed to increase school readiness and develop a child’s
potential to the fullest.

Low pressure will bring the next round of rain to

World Champ continued from front
did some tie-down roping at Western Oklahoma State
College while pursuing a degree in Agri-Industries and
Agencies. As a junior he transferred to Tarleton State
University in Stephenville, Texas. Before qualifying
for the College National Rodeo Finals in June of 2019
— which he won — he had already won the tie-down
roping title at the Montana Circuit Finals, qualified for
the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo and won that,
too! When he entered the CNFR he had already won
over $50,000 in the PRCA as a rookie. (Plans are to
graduate college this year.)
Some other memorable paychecks leading up
to his appearance at the NFR in Vegas came from
winning the Washington (Puyallup) State Fair Pro
Rodeo, the Deadwood (S.D.) Days Of 76 Rodeo, the
Eastern Montana Fair Rodeo in front of his hometown
crowd, and the Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo (San
Juan Capistrano, Calif.). He entered the NFR sitting in
second place with $119,879.
Haven is the first Montanan to qualify for the NFR
in the tie-down roping since Bill Parker of Billings
was there in 1980. That was in Oklahoma City, so the
young man from Cow Town was the first Montanan to
compete in this event at the Thomas and Mack Center.
His tie-down world championship is the first ever by a
Montanan. And by a professional rookie at the ripe old
age of 21 to boot? Simply incredible.
“People say I have a gift and stuff, but I damn sure
practice my ass off,” he said in a 406 Montana Sports
interview shortly after he won the title, returned home
to the ranch and got right back to work. “It’s just
something I always worked at. I ride six or seven horses
every day. You can never not get better. It never stops.”
You can bet he instilled that attitude into the minds
of Jack, JP, Charlie and Trevor while he was here.
Haven plans on gunning for more world tie down
titles and plans on adding steer roping to his repertoire
in hopes of an all around world title.

Bullock announces $123.5 million available in grants
Governor Steve Bullock
announced that families, small
businesses, non-profits, health
services centers and individuals
across Montana hardest-hit by
impacts of COVID-19 will be
eligible to apply for grants through
nine new programs created in
response to the emergency.
Guided by more than
1,400 public comments and his
Coronavirus Relief Fund Advisory
Council, Governor Bullock is
making $123,550,000 available
in the first round of emergency
grants funded through the federal
Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and
Economic Security (CARES) Act.
Beginning Thursday, May 7,
Montanans out of work, families
with limited resources, small
businesses, non-profits and others
can apply for financial relief for
things like rental and mortgage
assistance, business and non-profit
grants, grants to serve seniors and
those living with a disability, food
banks and local food producers.
The following new programs
join the state’s suite of existing
support services and direct federal
appropriations:
The Montana Business
Stabilization Grant program
will provide working capital for
Montana-owned small businesses
with 50 or fewer employees that
have sustained a loss of revenue
due to COVID 19. Current
funding available is $50 million,
the maximum award amount per
business is $10,000.
The Montana Innovation
Grant program is intended to
help companies scale up, improve
capabilities, or drive expanded
distribution of products or
services developed in response to
COVID-19. Non-profit and for-
profit businesses of less than 150
employees with primary operations
in Montana that have created an
innovative product or service
intended to directly confront the
COVID-19 emergency can apply
for grants of up to $25,000. Current
funding available is $5 million.
Montana Food and
Agriculture Adaptability Program
grants are available to food and
agriculture businesses to help
increase community resilience amid
the COVID-19 pandemic and other
economic disruptions. Examples
of eligible projects include those
focused on accessing new markets,
projects which strengthen and
expand local food systems, and other
business adaptations that decrease
food and agricultural waste. Current
funding available is $500,000, with a
maximum grant award of $10,000.
Emergency Housing
Assistance Program will provide
rent, security deposit, mortgage
payment, and/or hazard insurance
assistance as-needed for Montanans
who have lost a job or substantial
income loss as a result of COVID-19.
Initial payments may include up to
three months assistance where the
eligible household can demonstrate
arrears for April and May, with
continuable inability to make their
June payment. Montana Housing
will pay the difference between 30
percent of the household’s current
gross monthly income and their
eligible housing assistance costs,
up to $2,000 a month. Household
income limits range from $75,000-
$125,000 based on family size.
Montanans receiving other forms of
housing assistance are not eligible.
Total funding available is $50
million.
Public Health Grants are
available to local and tribal health
departments and urban tribal
clinics to help in the response
to COVID-19 and to meet the
needs of their communities. Each
organization is eligible to apply for
funding. Current funding available
is $5 million.
Stay Connected Grants
ranging from $500-$2,000 per
applicant are available to reduce
social isolation among Montana’s
seniors. Eligible applicants include
area agencies on aging, assisted
living facilities, nursing homes, and
tribal elder services. Grant funds
can be used to fund technologies
and other efforts to encourage
physically distant forms of social
interaction for elderly Montanans
during the COVID-19 public
health emergency. Current funding
available is $400,000.
Food Bank and Food Pantry
Assistance of up to $50,000 per
applicant are available to increase
food security for Montanans hardest
hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Eligible applicants include
community organizations providing
food assistance to Montanans with
limited resources, food banks, food
pantries, community cupboards,
and entities with infrastructures
already in place to begin new food
distribution programs. Current
funding available is $2 million.
Social Services Nonprofit
Grants of up to $10,000 per
applicant are available for nonprofit
organizations impacted by the
COVID-19 public health emergency
to retain existing programs
and services, employees, or
organizational viability for provision
of future services and operations.
Eligible applicants are registered,

Brush Lake State Park to Remain Closed Until Mid May

Brush Lake State Park,
Region 6’s only state park, is not
yet open for day-use or camping,
and will remain closed through
May 14, opening on May 15.
Normally, the park is open May
1-November 1. The gate into the
park is signed and locked at this
time.
“We apologize that the
park has to be closed just as we
are starting to get nice spring
weather,” says Chris Dantic,
park manager for Brush Lake
and several other state parks in
eastern Montana. “There is new
Ranger hired for the park, but
due to quarantine directives, they
will not be able to work at the
park at this time. With the need
to clean bathrooms, collect litter,
empty trash, collect fees, and
enforce rules and regulations, we
unfortunately can’t be open until
we have a full staff onboard.”
Once Brush Lake opens, this
is a fantastic place to visit and
recreate in northeast Montana.
The 280-acre lake is deep and clear
and has as beach that includes
picnic tables and barbeques. Most
of the public access and recreation
is at the northern end of the lake.
Activities include camping,
swimming, birdwatching, boating,
canoeing/kayaking, hiking, and
picnicking. Amenities at the park,
when open, include electricity,
parking, a boat launch, fire pits,
picnic tables, water, and trash
receptacles. The park amenities
are ADA accessible.
