Observation 6
Grade 5: Classifying Polygons

Lesson Essential Question(s): What is the difference between a regular and

irregular polygon?
Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.G.B.3
Learning Objectives and Assessments:
Learning Objectives Assessments
SWBAT identify the properties that Teacher Observation, Oral
make a figure a regular or Response, Participation, IXL HW
irregular polygon.

Materials:
 Math is Fun
 Shape Sorter
 “My Geometry Dictionary”
 Sort Polygons Do Now
Pre-lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge:
 Know types of angles: acute, obtuse, right, straight
 Know types of triangles: acute, obtuse, right, isosceles, scalene, equilateral
 Know polygon terms: similar, congruent, corresponding, and proportional
 Practice with classifying angles, classifying triangles, and similar and
congruent figures
Lesson Beginning:
 Do Now: Sort Polygons
o Look at both groups. What do you notice?
o Why do you think the figures are sorted this way? What makes a
figure a polygon?
 Q&A from the previous day’s work
Instructional Plan:
1) Math is Fun- Minilesson on regular vs irregular polygons
2) Add to “My Geometry Dictionary”
a) Polygon
b) Regular Polygon
c) Irregular Polygon
a. NCTM Shape Sorter
a) Guided Practice
a. All acute & All sides congruent
b) Assign to each group on Google Classroom
a. Allow students to explore for 7-8 minutes
Closure:
 Share findings from Shape Sorter
o Have students discuss what they
 Go over IXL HW and expectations- point out it is the sixth grade standard
