01: OVERVIEW OF POWER GENERATION IN PAKISTAN
• Electric power in Pakistan comes from a variety of sources:
• Hydel (i.e. Dams)
• Thermal
• Furnace
• Gas
• Coal
• Nuclear
• Renewable
• Wind
• Solar
• Bagasse
• Electricity Statistics of Pakistan in 2017-18 are:
• Installed Capacity = 33,554 MW

02: COMPARISON B/W OTHER THERMAL & GAS BASED PLANTS
• Efficiency of Thermal Power Plants of Different Types:
• Furnace
• Diesel engines efficiencies in the range of 35% - 42%

• Gas
• NATURAL GAS
• Gas turbines running, have an efficiency of 32% - 38%
• RLNG
• Can run at 60% efficiency at ISO Conditions.
This is by far the Highest Efficiency in the THERMAL POWER FIELD

• Coal
• Coal Plant Efficiency Ranges from 32% - 42%

• Nuclear
• Thermal cycle efficiencies are in the range of 38%

02: COMPARISON B/W OTHER THERMAL & GAS BASED PLANTS
• RLNG Based Plants Benefits:
• Reduced Emissions Compared to Heavy Fuel Oil
• Independence from Gas Suppliers
• Highly Efficient and Reliable Power
• Low-cost Energy Production
• Lower Maintenance Costs Compared to Heavy Fuel Oil
• Modular and Easy to Expand
• Pressurized Storage Tanks reduce storage costs.

• Safe Operation

Gas to power has become a global trend, with gas-fired power

generation expected to grow by more than 26% by 2030.

02: COMPARISON B/W OTHER THERMAL & GAS BASED PLANTS
• Carbon Emissions & Environmental Concerns:
Pakistan is highly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change.
Maplecroft's (2011) Index of vulnerability to climate change ranks
Pakistan 16th among 170 nations of the world. The country has moved
up in the vulnerability index since 2010, when it was rated 29th. The
2012 Global Climate Risk Index of Germanwatch ranks Pakistan as
eighth among over 180 nations of the world while it ranked Pakistan first
in 2010. This is rather ironical for a county that contributes very little to
the global greenhouse gases (GHGs) ranking 135th in the world in per
capita GHG emissions

Climate change will affect the ENERGY SECTOR directly as well as

indirectly through the ripple effect from its impacts on other sectors such
as water, industry, agriculture and infrastructure.

04: CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS
• Conclusion:
• The combustion of natural gas does not emit soot, dust or
fumes. It generates 30% less carbon dioxide (CO2) than fuel oil
and 45% less than coal, with a twofold reduction in nitrogen
oxide (N0x) emissions and almost no environmentally-
damaging sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions.
• Natural Gas being the cleanest fossil fuel (and RLNG much
cleaner); if coal-fired power plants were replaced by thermal
power plants fueled by natural gas/RLNG, the CO2 emissions
would be cut by 20% on a global scale.

BF LNG PROJECT
04: CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS
• Recommendations:
• In a country like Pakistan, where Environmental and Circular
Debt issues are playing major role in Energy Sector, the low-
priced and sustainable energy sources are essential for
economical growth planning
• Other than renewable energy options and hydroelectricity
projects, Gas based Power Plants are more reliable as
Furnace Oil PowerGen is expensive and Coal Fueled Power
Plants will cause major environmental impact specially due to
low maintenance budget trends.
