Essay about “FILINIALS”
Name: BUCOT, MARIA ALIZAH L.
Time: WF 10:00am – 11:30am

1. Discuss and explain your self qualities in accordance to the concept of Filinials in the
Philippine scenario?

As a person who is considered part of the Millenial or even Generation Z group, I have observed a lot of
implications of the characteristics of a Filipino Millenial or simply “Filinial” here in the Philippine scenario. There
are positive outcomes from it, but there are still inevitable negative things that results from the traits of a Filinial.

In other countries, at the age of as early as 16 years old, you can already work on your own or be
independent. Teenagers there could earn much at young age and can afford to pay for their own expenses.
Some millenials there even separate from their parents, and their parents won’t even hesitate to allow them.
This kind of culture is not just usual or even sometimes, not appropriate here in the Philippines. At the age of
16 to 22 years old, approximately, here in the Philippines, we should be studying for a degree and must graduate
on time. Most of our relatives or even our parents pressure us and tell us that we will have no good future if we
won’t have a degree that would have us be paid enough. With that, I have been very anxious about my life in
the future. I have always been cautious about my decisions and would always think about its future
consequences. However, I also have many unpleasant qualities that most of the Filinials possess. From being
lazy, too emotional, religiously unaffiliated but more socially oriented. These are just some of the traits that
make me just like any other Filinials. But, I promised myself that it won’t make me give up on aspiring a good
future for myself.

Honestly, the unemployment, underemployment and career shifting, were somewhat caused by the
traits of Filinials such as being very dependent to their parents. There are some who thinks that they have
unlimited time in life and by that they won’t bother being serious about getting degrees and jobs, some are to
preoccupied in their social life and won’t even mind how to deal with the reality of life. Indeed, beeing a millenial
in the Philippines is not easy. It requires a lot of patience and determination for someone here not to fall under
those negative implications.

Nonetheless, the qualities that I must continue to possess should be the qualities that will help me to
overcome this career-life-crisis I am yet to encounter because of the fact that I am a Filinial. But despite of being
lazy or being too socially oriented person, I want to exude more of my persistent side as a Filipino. We, Filipinos
are known to be very resilient. Even though we fall a hundred (100) times, we will still stand up a hundred times
more. And I guess, that quality made us, Filinials, somehow odd but in a good way, among other Millennials
around the world.
