CHAPTER 3

DATA PREPARATION FOR THE DESIGN OF STORM WATER DRAINAGE

SYSTEM

3.1 General
For the design and construction of drainage system, it is necessary to
understand the objectives of each of the project and the parties participate and help in
the project. The steps in the design of drainage system are
(1) preliminary investigations
(2) the detailed survey
(3) the actual design
(4) preparation of final map, plans, profiles and specification which are provided
for construction work.
In the drainage system, the preparation of data is important to determine the
flow rates of storm water. For determining the rate of flow of storm water, the
procedures to be carried are as follows:
(1) The catchment area in selected area is calculated..
(2) The rainfall intensity is estimated.
(3) Impermeability factor in selected area is determined.

3.2 Description of Study Area

Pathein is composed of (15) quarters and also there is (9) streams.Among
these streams,we choosed the Talychaung Chaung.Talychaung is located between the
Laeti ward and Bo Tae Gone ward. The length of Talychaung is 3140 feet from East
to West and the width of it is 18 feet from North to South. . The study area is located
in downtown area. The catchment area of Talychaung is flooded in rainy season. The
location map of catchment area in Talychaung is as shown in Fig.(3.1)

3.2.1 Catchment Area

22

The area of land draining into a stream on a water course at a given location is
known as catchment area. It is also called as drainage area or drainage basin. The
catchment area served by a given storm water sewer can be found directly from the
map of the town showing the positions of streets, houses, play grounds, sewers etc.
The project site has the catchment area of approximately 51.05. There are 24 drains
that flow into main drain. Dividing the 24 drains into three part, section A , B and C
according to their size, shape and catchment area. There are 8 drains in section A, 6
drains in section B and 10 drains in section C.

3.2.2 Rainfall Data

The quantity of water, usually expressed in millimeters or inches, that is
precipitated in liquid form in a specified area and time interval. Rainfall is often
considered to include solid precipitation such as snow, hail, and sleet as well.
The value of factor Ri i.e. intensity of rainfall in mm/hour (or cm/hour) can be
worked out from the rainfall records of the area. However R also depends upon
frequency and the duration of the storm. The followings tables are rainfall records
from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

According to tables, maximum rainfall = 7.16 inches

3.2.3 Impermeability Factor

The storm water flow depends upon the imperviousness of the surface over
which rainfall takes place. If the ground is relatively impervious, more runoff takes
place. The percentage of rain water that is available in the form of runoff is known as
impermeability factor or runoff coefficient. For design purposes the factor I must be
estimated not as it is at present but what it will be after development at the end of 30
years design period. However, since the factor I depends upon the type of the surface,
the catchment areas of different types of surfaces should be found separately.

For Impermeability (From site survey)

Type %Area Impermeability Coefficient

Roofs 65% 0.9

Pavements 20% 0.8
Unpaved 5% 0.2
Lawns` 10% 0.2

3.3 Data Acquistion and Analysis

In this study, the daily flow data of rainfall from 2013-2017 was
collected from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH). The data
of catchment area was collected from the Department of Agricultural Land
Management and Statistics and the FIELD AREA APPLICATION software. The
impermeability factors was collected by the site surveying.
