My village is very small and doesn’t have many facilities. It has small middle school, a
dispensary and ten or twelve local shops. Most of the people in my village are farmers and

My hometown is well-known for a cactus garden which has nearly 400 types of cactus, an
ancient museum, cricket stadium and a sports complex. Along with this, beautiful shopping

Navratri festival and a famous gurudwara Nada Sahib which is worth visiting place in my city.

the place. The history is related to five Pandavas stayed at this place during the period of their
exile and that time they dug the fresh water streams for themselves.

Though the history of my hometown is interesting but it is not much popular. That’s why it is
not included in the school curriculum and is not taught in schools.

11. Would you like to change anything in your hometown?

Massive development and big establishments has extended my city from all the sides. The
increasing facilities have attracted people to migrate and settle at this place. All type of
advancement and development has reduced greenery as well as natural sites from the city. I
would like to see more parks and green belt to save city from pollution. Another problem is
increasing number of two wheelers and four wheelers. People prefer their own vehicles to
commute which has resulted in traffic congestion and parking problem. Especially, market
place requires huge, spacious and systematic parking.

My city is a modern city. It has many recreational points to have fun. There are a number of
parks, shopping malls, cinema halls, discotheques and shopping plazas to hang out to enjoy life.
Mostly people visit these places in the evening or on holidays.

13. What changes would make your home town more appealing to people of your age?

It is true that my hometown is well planned and a modern city but it would be more alluring to
people of my age if there are more of recreational points like library, hobby developing places
etc. Along with this, there should be well developed shopping and entertainment places. Good
opportunities for job placements will also attract young people to settle here.

14. Do you see foreigners in your hometown? Where?

Yes, we see foreigners at many places in my hometown. They visit cactus garden, amusement
park, and fun city and Yavnika gardens in sector-5. In addition to this, foreign tourists visit
historical place like Pinjore Garden near my city.

15. How can I go to these places?

The transport system in my city is equally good, so one can go to these places either by a
public transport like bus or hiring a private vehicle.

HOBBIES:

My leisure pursuits are listening music, reading books and playing outdoor games. It gives me
complete relaxation and acts as stress buster. I love relaxing myself as it gives me creativity and
energy.

Yes, hobbies are very useful to us. They help us to pass time in a constructive way. They
inculcate creativity, rejuvenate and keep us fresh. They increase knowledge awareness and
moreover give mental relaxation and satisfaction. In some cases it has helped people to get

Usually people have hobbies according to their likings. Most of the hobbies are different from
one another. But, these days I see boys and girls have similar hobbies. Both are interested in
listening to music, watching T.V., in exploring their worlds, chatting on internet, playing
outdoor and indoor games and reading books etc.

19. Tell me about your family?

I come from a nuclear family. We are four members: my father, mother, a younger brother and
me. Both my parents are working. My father is a government employee, mother; a teacher
whereas I and my brother are students. My younger brother is a student of 12th class and I am
studying arts while pursuing graduation.

20. Do all the family members live at one place?

Yes, we all family members live at one place. My father’s office and my college both are in
Chandigarh, my mother teaches in the same school where my brother studies and it is near to
my house. So, we all live under one roof and commute to our scheduled places daily.

21. Do you face difference of opinion in your family?

I always obey and respect my parent’s decisions. But, sometimes I face differences in opinions.
It may be due to generation gap. Then I sit for some time with my parents to discuss my point
of view with them and feel comfortable.

FOOD:

23. What kind of food do you like to eat?

I am pure vegetarian so I like to eat vegetarian food which comprises of high nutritive value. I
always take those foods which are riches in carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins. Most of my
diet includes fruits, green vegetables, cereals, milk and milk products. They are healthy, easily
available and not too much expensive. The most interesting point is that it is easily digestible
and keeps my body and mind healthy.

I have heard a lot about traditional Gujarati food. If I get a chance, I would like to try this food
as its preparation is very simple without much spicy ingredients. The food will give me a
chance to taste cuisines of new culture and overall it is good for health also.

25. What do you usually eat for breakfast?

As I am a health conscious person, I prefer to take a light and energy-giver breakfast. Usually, I
eat bread sandwich with milk and few almonds for my breakfast but sometimes I take fried
chapattis with juices also. Cereals and fruit salad is part of my lunch.

26. What should we eat to stay healthy?

We should eat simple, hygienic and nutritious food to stay healthy. This means a diet rich in all
nutrients: vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and proteins. These all are easily available in fruits,
milk, eggs, almonds etc. Apart from this, food should be clean and free from germs.

27. Which meal of the day is important to you?

For me, breakfast is most important. My working schedule starts at 8 am. In the morning, I have
to do a lot of work at my workplace. If I do not take a healthy and good breakfast, the metabolic
exercise makes me tired and exhausted. So, a nutritive diet in the morning is compulsory for
me.

28. Will people change their diet in the future?

Yes, I think people will prefer to have fast food and packed food more in future. As most of the
people in my country are becoming career oriented, so, they will be occupied with their jobs for
long hours and will not have time to cook food for themselves. Limitation of time and the need
of hour will change their diet.

29. Do you eat fruits and vegetables?

Yes, surely, I love to eat fruits and vegetables. They have high nutritional value. That is why;
they are important part of my diet. Also, they come to us direct from the nature and I believe all
natural products are simply amazing and health friendly.

Fruits are major part of my diet. I eat all types of seasonal fruits to stay healthy but citrus fruits
are the most preferred one. They not only provide instant energy but are also pocket friendly.

Sometimes I buy fruits and vegetables myself and sometimes, I accompany my mother to buy
these as I feel she is a perfect home maker, good at bargains and efficient in choosing fresh
vegetables.

Yes, since my childhood I am in a habit of eating fruits and vegetables. At that time, my mother
used to care of my health so it was a compulsory diet for me. She always insisted on strong and
effective eating habits which included eating fruits and vegetables.

33. Why do you think fruits and vegetables are important?

The fruits and vegetables supply important components like carbohydrate, iron, vitamins and
minerals to our body, which keep our body healthy and fit. They are also known as protective
foods which help a person to stay away from diseases. That’s why fruits and vegetables are
important.

34. What kind of restaurants do you prefer?

I prefer family restaurants which serve healthy and hygienic food. I always choose the eating
points which prepare pure vegetarian food. Since I am a food lover and like to taste various
dishes. In addition to this, while selecting a restaurant I give preference to comfortable sitting
arrangement, quick table and co-operative staff service. Sometime an eye-catching interior and
overall ambiance also allure me to have food in that restaurant.

35. Which is your favorite restaurant in your city? Why?

Food Plaza is my favorite restaurant. It is located in a posh area and has a huge parking facility.
It provides quality food and exceptionally good services. The ambience of the restaurant is
attractive and inviting.

All the family members in my family are busy in their profession. Due to different working
hours, it is not that much possible for all to have meals together during day time but at dinner
time, we all use to sit and enjoy meals together as this is the only time when we all are at home.

Having meals together helps to share feelings and emotions which increase warmth in relations
and helps to strengthen family bond. Apart from this, it gives feeling of oneness among family
members and moreover, anyone can discuss their view point with each other which helps to
reduce communication gap and generates more love among family members. All these things
are helpful to keep a family united and joint.

38. How do people usually eat in your country?

Different people have their own way of eating. Some traditional families sit on floor and eat
with hands while other modern families use dining table and use forks and spoons. Eating habits
differ from culture to culture also.

39. What kind of food did you eat as a child?

Since I belong to a pure vegetarian family so in my childhood I enjoyed vegetarian food which
included fruits and vegetables. My mother including my grandmother prepared various kinds of
tasty and delicious dishes for me. Both of them were conscious about the nutritive value and
hygienic conditions of the food.

40. Do you think children can eat in restaurants sometimes?

Yes, I think children should have food in restaurants because they get to know about table
manners and it gives them a chance to relish food which is different from home-made food.
Children should enjoy variety of food and taste them but occasionally.

WORK:

41. Do you work or study?

I am a professional. I am working as a staff nurse in a reputed hospital named “Rogmukt” in


sector 17, Chandigarh. I am working there since March 2005 and my job responsibilities
include looking after the indoor patients and obeying doctor’s orders in the operation theater.

42. What kind of work it is?

Well sir, the work is related to medical field. It is totally related to service towards humanity.
The major duties are to keep the patients under medical vigilance by giving medicines and other
medical treatment, helping doctors during operation in Operation Theater and minor duties
involve giving guidelines and counseling the patients towards a good health.

43. What do you like most about your job?

I like the most to interact with and counseling the patients while taking care of them. Along
with this, I like to work with doctors in the Operation theatre also. For me, post- operative care
is most essential. These all help me to know more and explore more related to my work.

44. What is the best time of the day for your work?

Most of my duties are in shifts but I like the day shift most and specially the morning time when
our senior staff takes our meeting. At that time I feel active and energetic. I learn a lot new
things at that time.

45. What makes your job more interesting or more exploring?

Facing new challenges especially in emergency makes my job more interesting as well as
exploring. There I learn things like how to take quick decisions and work actively. The
situations there make me strong and efficient. Moreover, I love exploring my abilities deeply.

46. Do you like people around your work? Why?

Yes, definitely, the people around me are my colleagues, doctors and patients. All of them are
very co-operative, supportive and helpful to me. It is only because of these people that I gain a
lot of work experience.

47. Is this job common in your country?

Yes, these days this kind of job is becoming very popular. Firstly, the demand of this profession
is increasing worldwide and secondly, in my home country hospitals are increasing so the scope
of this profession is also expanding. Moreover, Government is also encouraging many private
universities and institutions to introduce new courses for studies in the area of nursing. This is
fostering many people to join these courses and get job in various Government sectors.

FRIENDS:

49. Do you have many friends or just one or two friends?

I don’t believe in making a number of friends just for the sake of fun. I have only one friend
who is honest and trustworthy towards me. She is an honest friend to me from my school days.
She is very accommodating, co-operative and always ready to help. We stand together for many
reasons and have a good compatibility in between us.

50. When and where do you meet your friend?

I and my friend, both are working so we hardly meet on weekdays but we meet on weekends
and in vacations. We usually visit each other’s home; enjoy gossips with a cup of tea.
Sometimes we plan a picnic with kids also.

51. What do you and your friend like to do together?

My friend is like a companion to me. We both generally like to talk to and share our feelings
and discuss our education and career options. Sometimes we discuss our future career options

For me, both are equally important. I live in family and it always stands beside me as a strong

In this materialistic world it is difficult to find a true friend. But, it doesn’t mean there are no
true friends. According to me, a true friend is one who is selfless, supportive, honest, and cares

All my friends are not of my age. Some are my colleagues and they are elder to me. They guide
me selflessly so they are my friends. Some others are of my age and I enjoy and have fun with

55. Do you usually see your friends during the week or at weekends?

I am a working person. So, I don’t get time daily to meet my friends. But, the friends who are
my colleagues I meet them at my work. I see my college friends only on weekends. We all have
great fun together.

Yesterday, in the evening I met my friends. We all together went for shopping as one of our
friends is leaving next week to Australia for higher studies.

Friends actually are very important in everyone’s life. They are like support in our life. I share
my feelings and emotions with my friends and moreover I find my friends to be true friends as
they are very caring, accommodating and encouraging in each and every situation. I can only
experience their importance.

Everything changes with the time. I observe meaning of friendship is also changing today. It is
difficult to judge who is a true friend. Most of the people these days want their friends to be
from rich families so that they can enjoy their life having fun and pleasure. So, as long as,
friends have money, they look sweeter than honey. Priorities in life and status have changed the
earning of friendship.

COUNTRY

59. Tell me about your country?

I belong to India. My Country is a place of saints and sages. People of this country, are
religious, spiritual and peace loving. It has a great heritage and rich culture and tradition. For
effective governance the whole country divided into 29+ states. Every state has a number of
cities and villages. Approximately 70% people in my country live in villages.

60. Do all the people in your country follow same culture and single religion?

People in my country follow different religions and variety of cultures. My country is divided
into 28 states and every state has its own language and culture. But, there are four main
religions. All the religions are equally respected and any one can see unity in diversity in my
country.

The places of visit which are popular are: the historical places in Delhi, Agra, Mumbai, and
Kolkata along with these the places of spiritual importance are also popular. Likewise South of
India is popular for beautiful and attractive temples.

62. What would you suggest to a visitor from overseas country to see in your country?

My country is a land of temples and spiritual places so it has a great religious and spiritual
important also. I will suggest the overseas visitor to see beautiful monuments which tell their
own history. I would recommend temples which speak themselves about their religious
importance. To enjoy natural sceneries and varied climate on hill stations, I will prefer a person
to go Himachal Pradesh and Jammu Kashmir.

63. Tell me about the kind of tourists visiting your country?

Generally, tourists visit my country to study the history, culture and religion. Mostly they visit
the historical places and places of religious and spiritual importance. These tourists are from
different parts of the world. They really come to explore India. India has a vast potential as far
as its geographic diversity is concerned.

64. Where do you see foreign visitors in your city these days?

These days, I see foreign visitors at tourist places in Chandigarh. The popular places of their
like are: Lake, museum, art gallery, rock garden and they even like to visit some international
schools also.

65. Is there any traditional art or music in your country which you can suggest to a foreign
visitor?

My country is divided into states and every state has its own traditional art and music. Likewise,
in Punjab, traditional art Phulkari and music Gidda and Bhangra is famous. In the same way
Rajasthan based handcraft, puppet making and music is very famous, I will recommend every

I live in Panchkula near Chandigarh. This city is in Haryana State which is in Northern part of
my country. It is an urban area which is well planned. Organized and developed city. This place

I like the culture and tradition of this country. Along with this, I also like the helpful attitude of
people. People treat guest as God. My country is home of diversity but diversity is united
through garland of love and mutual respect. Different historical and other tourist places make it

68. What are the existing problems in your country?

My country is a developing country and there are a number of tribulations in my country like;
increasing population is the biggest threat in progress of my country. Along with this illiteracy,
unemployment and pollution are the major dilemma in our country. Another problem that is
raising its hood is the traffic on the roads.

69. How would you improve your country?

I think individually, it is very difficult to improve but if the citizens join hands to help
Government then it is possible to improve. The first and foremost is corruption and then
unemployment which I would like to improve.

70. Which part of your country do most people live in?

My country is divided into four regions. All the regions are well developed but most of the
people in my country live in villages. It is known that around 80% of whole population lives
and works in villages.

My country is a developing country. These days the country is progressing in all the fields. Not
only this, many multi-national companies are establishing their business in my country. In

Transport system in my country is well developed. These days, it is very easy to travel around
my country. My country has a varied transport system which includes buses, taxis, trains, and
airplanes. People can opt any according to their need and convenience. These days I observe
pocket friendly air-fares are encouraging people to take more air journeys.

73. Has your country changed since your childhood?

Yes, my country has changed a lot since my childhood. It has developed in all the sectors like:
industrial, education, IT, medical and transportation. Now, in every sector, work is done
through new technology. Many big industries and infrastructure have come up in my country.
Multinational companies are also showing keen interest to establish their outlets and offices.

COOKING

74. Do you like cooking?

Yes, I like cooking. I cook food daily for my family and prepare special dishes on festivals,
family functions and celebration. It’s my hobby too.

75. Who taught you cooking?

I didn’t get any formal training in cooking. From my childhood, I observed my mother cooking
in the Kitchen and I automatically learnt to cook. For cooking Special dishes, my mother helped
me.

76. Which food items do you like to cook?

I like to cook many vegetarian food items like rice, vegetables, pulses vegetable soups,
puddings and oiled chapattis popularly Known as pranthas. Along with this, I also like to cook
Chinese and Italian dishes.

Usually my mother cooks food at my home but sometimes I help her in cooking. Since she is
the head of the family and knows our taste of various food items so she takes the responsibility
of cooking food at home.

78. Do you see yourself cooking more in future?

Yes, I feel that I will be cooking more in the future. As I am planning to study overseas, I will
be living there away from my family so I think I will be cooking more. In addition to this, I am
learning to prepare new dishes which I will practice later. So this will give me an opportunity to
cook more in future.

79. What was the last meal you cooked?

I cooked my last meal today in the morning before coming for the test. The meal was spicy
mixed vegetable and chapattis. I also prepared fried rice with tomato soup. This is the dish my
daughter likes most.

80. Do you prefer home- cooked food or food from restaurants? Why?

I prefer home-cooked food. I think it is more hygienic and cooked with love. After having
home-cooked food, I feel contented and satisfied.

81. In your country, is cooking a man’s job or woman’s job?

In my country cooking is completely woman’s job. People in my country even make fun of men
who cook food. It is fixed in everyone’s mind that the kitchen is only for women. She has to
cook and serve the family. Furthermore, since childhood mother inspires a girl child to cook
tasty food to make her family happy.

82. How do you feel about eating food from another country?

These days Chinese food is becoming very popular in my country. It is spicy, tasty, and I also
like to eat Chinese for a change of taste. Though I feel it’s more of non-vegetarian, but I love to
eat anything vegetarian.

Yes, I like meeting people. Daily I go to college and meet people around me. Apart from this, I

Well sir I am working as a trainer and daily I meet my students and new people also who want
to join the institution for learning. Today, I am on leave for my speaking test. Yesterday, I met a
person in the afternoon that came to join the class.
