Lesson __3____ of a _3___ Day Learning Segment

Subject and Lesson Topic: Science- Outer Space: Galaxies, The Sun, and Other Objects

Grade Level: 6 Lesson Duration: 10-250minutes

Central Focus of the Learning Segment
The central focus is an understanding that you want your students to develop. It is a description of the important identifiable theme, essential question, or topic within
the curriculum that is the purpose of the instruction of the learning segment (Making Good Choices, 2016).

The central focus of this learning segment is for students to learn more about the objects in our solar system. They will explore the planets, the types
of stars and their life cycles, and groupings and how that impacted humans. They will also learn about the sun and its layers, the different types of
galaxies, and lastly the other smaller objects in our solar system include asteroids and comets.
Knowing Your Learners
Using Prior Knowledge
What do you know about your students’ prior academic learning as it relates to the central focus? (edTPA Handbook, Task 1, Prompt 2a)

Students have learned briefly about space in the years previous. They have a basic understanding of some of the planets, the sun, and the moon.
How will you use this knowledge to inform your instruction? (edTPA Handbook, Task 1, Prompt 3a)

I will use this knowledge by beginning with the basics which include the names of the planets and their position, and then building onto this with more complex
content in order to provide them a more full picture of the various objects.

Curriculum Standards
Ontario Science and Technology Standards.
Understanding Earth and Space Systems
3. Understanding Basic Concepts
3.1 Identify components of the solar system, including the sun, the earth, and other planets, comets, asteroids, and meteoroids and describe their physical
characteristics in qualitative terms.
3.2 Identify the bodies in space that emit light and that reflect light.
