Scots team
develops
antibody
test for virus
BY HANNAH CARMICHAEL

A NEW “fast and accurate”

coronavirus antibody test has been
developed by a company in
Edinburgh, though bosses fears the
NHS could miss out amid interest
from Europe.
Researchers for blood-screening
specialists Quotient have developed
a new test for Covid-19 immunity
which detects whether a person has
developed antibodies to the disease.
Their serological screening
machines have capacity for up to
36,000 tests a day and produce
results in 35 minutes with 99.8%
accuracy, according to the firm.
It added that it has 12 screening
machines available, with a further 20
expected to be ready by the end of
the year, but it has already had
talks with interested parties
across Europe.
However, with the new test
developed by scientists in Edinburgh,
the company is calling for the UK
and Scottish governments to begin
talks so that the NHS might be able
to benefit.
While the UK Government says it
has laboratory capability to test for
coronavirus immunity, it is currently
being used for survey testing of
existing blood samples and the
capacity is not known.
It is also attempting to develop
home testing kits, rather than
requiring analysis in laboratories, but
so far these have proved unreliable.

Tory minister

BBC to get

BY ANDREW LEARMONTH

THE Tory minister in charge of

broadcasting has complained to the
BBC over last week’s Panorama
investigation into personal
protective equipment (PPE)
shortages among healthcare
workers.
In a furious letter to the BBC
director general, Oliver Dowden
said viewers “should be able to
turn to the BBC for transparent,
unimpeachable, reliable news”.
In their report, broadcast last
Monday, Panorama said gowns,
visors, swabs and body bags were
left out of the Government’s
stockpile when it was set up
in 2009.
However, a number of NHS
workers who were interviewed for
the programme have since been
identified as members or supporters
of the Labour party.
In the letter, which was also
published by the Mail on Sunday
yesterday, Dowden wrote:
“Concerns have been raised that a
disproportionate number of those
interviewed in the programme were
political activists or had clear links
to a political party.
“This both was not made clear
to viewers and does not reflect the
balance of views of an institution as
large as the NHS,” he wrote.
Dowden says in his letter he is
sure Lord Hall “will agree that
at a time of heightened risk of
misinformation and disinformation,
it is more important than ever that
the BBC upholds the values and
standards we all expect”.
A senior Government source told
the paper: “There is a worrying

males and females, and tech lovers
