Lesson Plan 6
Name of the curricular structure(s): Little Melba and Her Trombone by Katheryn Brown
Standards:
ELA
1. RL.K.1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Social Studies
Rationale: I decided to talk about music and how it is related to culture as well as feelings. In
the book they discuss how Melba was from Kansas City, a place where you could “feel the
music”. Melba always loved the sound of music and even created her own music and eventually
played the trombone. During this lesson I would like my students to think about the feelings of
the artist who created the music they listen to as well as their own feelings when they listen to
the music. I also want my students to think about the audience of the music they listen to. In the
book Melba toured the world and had many different audiences after many people did not want
to listen to her music. Students will be able to understand how audiences vary depending on the
music.
Materials:
2. Whiteboard
3. Youtube

5. Paper
1. First I will ask my students about the songs/generes/artist they listen to and why
5. The students will then describe their pick and who they believe the audience/culture is as
This topic is relevant because students will be challenged to dig deeper when thinking of music.
Many times we listen to music without thinking about it as an actual art form. This lesson plan
will allow students to dig deeper and discover more about the music, themselves, and their
Assessment:
I will assess my students during the time that they present their findings to the class. Students
should be able to understand the audience of the music as well as the reason/emotion behind the
music.
