1. RISK FACTORS THAT MAKE GENDER VIOLENCE PERMISSIBLE

2. Problem statement

The psychological abuse suffered by many women by their partners is not usually given

the same importance as physical and sexual abuse, since it is believed that many of these women

who are victims of this type of abuse exaggerate and in many cases there is no evidence to

demonstrate such abuse. This violence is reflected through words of hurtfulness, screaming,

contempt, humiliation, insults, taunts and other behaviors that minimize a woman's self-esteem,

psychological abuse is one of the most common and most devastating behaviors than physical

abuse but, the least explored according to qualitative studies conducted by the WHO [ CITATION

Wor99 \l 9226 ].

In most cases these behaviors of psychological violence begin during the courtship

(Echeburúa, Corral, Sarasua and Zubizarreta, 1996). Signs of some kind of psychological

violence in the first few months of a relationship is a good prognosis of future physical abuse

(Murphy y O’Leary, 1989; O’Leary, Malone y Tyree, 1994).

The different behaviors of psychological abuse by the couple towards the woman are

aimed at clearly and expressly determining that it is the man who has the dominance and

authority over the relationship, thus this implies that the role of the woman is that of

subordination and submission before him (Miguel Lorente 2004).

In this way we see how the woman begins to be manipulated by the wishes and judgment

of the man at his will since, the goal of the man is to keep the woman under his control,

achieving her psychological dependence, causing her fear in advance or emotional damage

(Bonino, 1999; Bebel, 2004).

In accordance with previously mentioned we find psychological violence more difficult

to perceive by women who are victims, so we see the need to investigate what emotional factors

influence a woman who is being a victim of gender-based violence to stay with her partner?

3. General Objective:

 To know the emotional factors that influence women who are victims of psychological

violence to continue in a relationship that affects them emotionally.

4. Specific Objectives:

 Establish the relationship of emotional dependence that is generated by allowing

psychological abuse on the part of the couple.

 To identify emotional damage that is originated by psychological violence.

 Determine mechanisms to help women who experience gender-based violence that can

detect these behaviors early.

5. Justification.
The purpose of this research focuses on the emotional factors that influence a woman

who is victim of gender violence and  the reasons why she is staying with her partner, there are

different types of abuse such as physique, sexual, economic and psychological, but in this essay

we will focus on the psychological side on the part of the couple, in order to observe how this

abuse influences her self-esteem and identity. Usually in the news you hear about cases of

gender-based violence and they talk specifically about the physical and sexual part, but very little

is spoken of a violence that is silent and goes unnoticed as is psychological violence or emotional

abuse (Hernández, Magro, Cuellar, 2014).

Women have evolved in different social and intellectual aspects and have shown that

they are able to develop different roles within society. For these reasons it is hard to believe that

gender inequality can still be seen in these times, which is based on the idea of man's power and

superiority against the submission of women. (Hernández, Magro, Cuellar, 2014). (Lavilla,

Cabrero, Aranda. 2011).

The focus of this work will be on identifying the reasons why women who are abused by

their partners prefer to hide these circumstances by forgetting the consequences of covering up

these facts which may simply begin as situations that may be unnoticed by third parties such as,

ridicule in private or in public, insults, bad-taste jokes, critical jealousy, lack of privacy with

their personal objects like her cell phones, mockery of their religious beliefs among others.

(emakunde, 2006).
On the basis of this it is vitally important to contribute in one way or another to this

controversial problem and seek a solution to eradicate it, for this to be done it is important to

investigate in detail the meaning of terms such as psychological abuse, and their emotional

consequences and dependence on the couple since often these concepts are not given respective

meaning and importance, ignoring the incidence and condition that can cause damage in women

on a psychological level. (Lavilla, Cabrero, Aranda. 2011).

As Elie Wiesel Nobel peace 1986 says "in the face of atrocities we have to take sides (...)

silence stimulates the executioner." Based on this we can plan support methods for women to

recognize and talk if they are being emotional abused.

6. Hypothesis:

This research paper set the following hypothesis:

1. Psychologically abused women remain with their partner for fear of being left alone.

2. Women justify the emotional violence of their partners.

3. Women blame the property for their partner's behavior.

4. Psychological violence has consequences for women's self-esteem.

5. Women prone to these situations come from families with a history of domestic violence.
