Lesson Plan Details:

Lesson Introduction - “Before”: (2-3 minutes)

● *Students will be sitting in a classroom in a small group circle. Books will be placed in various directions propped up against the
wall near us.*

● Hello everyone, my name is ________, and we are going to learn about the parts of a book. Can anyone tell me or show me the
(insert part of a book)?

● Pause to allow students to think before they give answers.

● *I will hold a book in my hand, display the book to the students, and give the students time to answer by calling on them when
they raise their hands.*
● Good job! You remembered where (insert part of a book) is located, but there are many more interesting parts to books. Today
we will learn about the parts of a book, and each parts meaning or functions.

Learning Activities - “During”: (10 minutes)

● First let’s look at some books I have here.
*I will grab a book to begin. *

● On the very front of our book is the f ront cover.

*I will point to the whole front cover and take my hand all over it.*
The f ront cover tells us lot’s of different things about a book.

● *Points to the title of the book.*

This is the t itle of the book. It is called… Can everyone point to the title of their book?
*Waits for everyone to point to the title.*

● Good job! The front cover also tells us who wrote the book.
*Points to the author.*
The person that writes the book is called the author. The author of my book is…

● The illustrator of the book is also on the front cover of a book. The illustrator is someone who draws the pictures in the book.
The illustrator of my book is…

● Turn and tell your neighbor everything we learned about the front cover of a book.
* I will give them a few moments to discuss while listening and correcting them if wrong. *

● Let’s look at the back cover of the book.

*I will turn the book over and use the pointer to point to the whole back side of the book.*
The back cover of the book gives us clues about what is going to be in the book.

● The spine of the book is what holds the book all together just like the spines in our backs hold us all together.
*I will turn the book to show the spine of it. *
Sometimes it will even tell us the title and author of the book again.
● The very last thing I will show you is the title page of a book.
*I will flip open to the title page.*
This page shows you the title of the book and the author once again. It is similar to the front cover.

● *I will have sticky notes already labeled so each student can tell me where the parts of a book are and I can label them.*
Here I have sticky notes. I need you guys to show me the parts of a book on the books you have so that I can label them on my
book.
Can you show me where the front cover is? Back cover? Title? Illustrator? Author? Spine?
Closure - “After”: Restate teaching point, clarify key points, extend ideas, check for understanding

Okay, class after everything we just talked about can anyone show me the main parts of a book?
● Taking turns on whomever gets called on, come to the front of the class and show what each part is of the book is by either
pointing or filling in the spaces on the board. Using the smart board.

Now that we know the main parts of a book can anyone tell me what each part means?
● Calling on a student that raises their hand, I will then ask if they can describe what each part of the book means.

Class I want you to get in small groups with the students at your table and color in what each part is by the color as shown.
● All small groups will have a paper with the picture of all parts of the book also with a color beside it.
● As they’re working on this I will be going around checking to make sure they are on task, see if anyone has any concerns on what
something is and really assess to see if the class is ready to move forward.
● I will also add an illustrator name and author before printing out the print out.

So tomorrow when we come into class I will ask you all if anyone can remember what we talked about today. I hope everyone has
learned something new!

Assessment:

Assessment Strategy: Alignment with Objectives:

*I will add illustrator, author, and title before printing out the This assessment aligns with my objectives because the children
page.I will remind the children that the front page is typically the can label the author, title, front cover, back cover, illustrator,
first page of the book * spine, and the title page.
Students will have a worksheet given to them at the end of the
lesson. Each student will color in the appropriate part of the book
with a distinguished color key, which is listed below. Evidence of Student Understanding:
Author: Pink This assessment is appropriate because it helps a child learn by
Title: Purple them physically being able to color where the different parts of
Front cover: Blue books are.
Back cover: Green
Illustrator: Orange Student Feedback:
Spine: Black I will walk around the classroom and assess their progress on
Title page: Brown coloring, appropriate labeling, and neatness.
If the child needs more help:
● I will have a conversation with the child and guide him by
asking questions and helping him/her with labeling
correctly.
If the child is labeling correctly:
● I will say good job on staying on task, lets see if you can
color within the lines more, or color in the white spaces
more evenly.
If the child is labeling and coloring perfectly:
● I will keep the child working by asking them to go to a
book and practice pointing out the different parts of the
book with a friend that is finished.

Extension:

To continue practicing and building meaning the students could go home and show their parents, brother, sister, or pet the different parts
of the book. Also, during reading time they could buddy up and label the parts of the books before reading silently. As the units progress
into reading, I could quickly ask assess the children on the different parts of the books before beginning a lesson everyday.
