Music Lesson Plan

Title: “Starlight” Grade Level: 1st

Source: The Singing Classroom

Materials Needed:
• Star (cut-out, toy, stuffed, etc.)
• Any available instruments

Procedure:

AS: What do you guys know about stars? What is your favorite thing about stars?
Have any of you ever made a wish on a star or a shooting star? Well, today, we
have a song about a star and making wishes, and we have created this star to pass
around the classroom! We’re going to start with learning the song first, then we
will pass our star around the class. When the star gets to you, you get to play your
instrument for us!

1. First, play the song “Starlight” for the students while singing along

2. Repeat the song until the students seem to know the lyrics
3. Once the students know the lyrics, start with the star in the circle and show
the students that the star means you get to play your instrument for one
verse. Ex: “Star Light”, then pass the star. “Star Bright”, then pass the star
4. Whoever is holding the star on the last line gets to make a wish and then
pass it to the next person in the circle.
5. Repeat this until every child has gotten the chance to play their instrument.
6. Work on passing the star to the beat and staying on beat, while focusing on
the sound of each instrument.

Closure: We have had so much fun getting to hear everyone’s instruments and all
of your wishes! Is there anyone that did not get to make a wish that still wants
to? What was your favorite instrument that we played today? Awesome! We
hope you had fun singing about stars and playing your instruments for us.
