Music Lesson Plan

Title: “Going Places Together” Grade Level: 1st
Source: Making Music by Silver Burdett p.286-287

Materials needed:
• “When the Train Comes Along” from CD 8-20

Procedure:

A.S: Hello everybody! Does anybody know anything about trains? What kind of
sounds do trains make? What kind of movements would you make to show a
train? That’s great! Now, let’s listen to the song “When The Train Comes Along”
and think a little more about trains!

1. Listen to the song “When The Train Comes Along” from CD 8-20. Discuss the
events mentioned in the song. Have the children sit in a circle and begin patting to
the beat, following your lead.

2. Have the children stand up and put the beat in their feet, playing the song
again.
• step in place to the beat on the refrain song and pat the beat on the verses
• turn to the right and move “like a train” (in a circle) to the beat. Keeping the
beat in their feet the entire time.
• once the students seem to have the hang of it, play the song one last time and
encourage students to sing along as well.

3. Sit back down in the circle and assess. Ask the children what the song was
about, which part was the verse, what did they like about the song, etc.

Closure: We had so much fun getting to sing about trains with you today! We
hope you learned more about trains and had fun with us!
Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson students will have learned more about
trains, keeping the beat of a song in their feet and learned a new song to sing.
