ABSTRACT: Artificial lungs are devices that replace the function of the lungs. These devices, also
called oxygenated membranes, perform the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide from the blood, and
replace all or part of the work of the severely ill lungs. Severe respiratory failure that manifests as the
sensation of shortness of breath can occur acutely or chronically. The objective of using these devices is
to stabilize the patient by oxygenation of the blood until the recovery of the damaged lung or until its
replacement by a lung transplant.
