Cultural Impacts
Can culture impact research? How does culture get out there? Can it also affect argument styles?
Does culture in writing make it stronger? Are stereotypes included in culture? Do they make the
paper stronger? These questions most likely go through the readers mind as they read pages 507-
599. The purpose of this page is to explain how culture impacts research and argument styles.
The first part is stereotypes in cultures and in media. Stereotypes in media can change
someone’s perspective on themselves and their cultures. An example from the book Everything’s
an Argument stated that an article from 2011 examines the ways that, little girls discover Disney
Princesses, a line of merchandise based on the animated films, their understanding change (507).
It can often make a person second guess themselves and make them want to look different rather
than who they are because of the stereotypes going around. Seeing things on media can make the
person viewing it wish they were not part of the culture that they were born in to because of the
media making their culture look bad. Another example would be with the Navajo Culture. In the
media they say that all Natives dress in traditional clothing every day and ride horses everywhere
and live in teepees. These are not true. As someone who is Native American these stereotypes
are false. The only time that traditional attire is worn is when a ceremony is going on or when
there are sacred events going on. Most of the time Natives wear traditional jewelry instead of
dressing up. Not all Natives live in teepees, they use it for ceremonial purposes and as for the
horses’ part they ride horses to heard sheep and take them out to ride.
The second part is the gender stereotyping. Gender Profiling is saying that a certain
gender needs to play their role and nothing else. An example of gender stereotyping is females
and barbies. In magazines it shows a picture of barbie and a female, it says next to it that all
females should look like barbie by having skinny waists or blonde hair. They should love to wear
pink clothes and makeup. And girls have to be pretty like barbie. These kinds of things are the
type that make the female gender second guess themselves because of the standards that are
placed in front of them. Barbie is the epitome of a “perfect woman”.
The third part is Racial Profiling. Racial Profiling is targeting individuals for crime based
on the individuals race or religion. The most common race that goes through racial profiling are
African American men. They are always portrayed as a bad person in movies and video games
because of racial profiling. And the way that they are view by the public eye. For example, an
African American man walks down the street minding his own business and people stare at him
and assume that he is in a gang just because he’s a man of color. But if a white man walks down
the street playing loud music people will not view him as harmful. This is racial profiling.
Assuming that a certain race is dangerous just because they are of a certain race or religion.
In conclusion, culture impacts research in numerous ways such as stereotyping in media,
gender stereotyping and racial profiling. Of course, there are many more impacts that culture has
on research, but these are the few that stood out while writing this essay. The questions that were
asked at the beginning of the essay were answered in this essay. Hopefully this essay helps to
understand how culture can impact research.
