Corporate Venture Studios
Corporate venture studios are specialized firms that build
new startups from scratch for enterprises. They provide a
hybrid mix of talent, capital and strategic direction in
cooperation with the client enterprise.
Enterprises, on the other hand, will often provide initial
capital and strategic direction to the corporate venture
studio who brings the talent, process and know-how to build
a startup.
While large companies excel at incremental innovation that
grows the core business, they have long struggled with how
to capitalize on industry disruption and embrace new
business models.
This innovator’s dilemma is not new, but over the last few
years these corporate venture studios have emerged to help
big companies harness the big advantages they have in
starting new businesses while helping to address some of the
challenges and risks that any new venture brings.

Partnering with a corporate venture studio involves
leveraging outside entrepreneurial talent and funneling
enterprise assets such as capital, supply and demand
networks, customer knowledge, and experienced personnel
towards the development of a new venture.

Independent Venture Studios
Independent venture studios provide all the resources
needed to launch a new startup including the team, strategic
direction and capital from their own balance sheets. They
may have raised outside funds and have LP’s (outside
investors), but usually the principal of the venture studio
makes the final decision on what startups to spin-out and
the amount of resources to allocate as these new businesses
gain traction.
Independent venture studios are, in essence, a more
vertically integrated approach to the traditional venture
capital model of starting a new business from scratch.

Client acquired Autonomic with Applico’s guidance, a 9-

figure acquisition, and then created a new business unit that
provides the foundation of this platform business called the
Transportation Mobility Cloud.

Ford’s TMC secured global partnership with Amazon AWS.

The Client’s Challenge
Client’s industry is transitioning from one dominated by
hardware to one where software is fast becoming a major
part of the value chain. Client wanted to avoid hardware
commoditization while owning the value created by this new
software ecosystem.

Client had limited experience in acquiring third-party

developers in a scalable manner and needed a partner to
validate the opportunity and create the roadmap for this
business.

Applico’s Solution & Outcome

In 3 months, Applico validated and launched a development
platform focused around the vehicle and unique vehicle data
to facilitate the connection of third-party software creators
and service providers with vehicle owners. Worked with
