DIRECTIONS TO BE STUDIED BEFORE USING

THIS DICTIONARY
(as given by Prin. Apte, as far as followed in this edition)
1. Words and their derivatives oro arranged in the following order :-- first thiu
radical or primitive word in large black typo in all its different parts of
spoochi. In some cases these derivatives are givon in their own alphabetical order
for the sake of clonrness.
3. The difforent parts of speech of a word ore indicated by large black dushes,
after which the nominativo singular of the part of speech is usually given, or the
lottery w., ,., . or ind, aro put after the dish, the loading word being given only
once. Whero a word is usedl 08 an adjective and also as a substantive, the sins of
the adjectivo are invariably givon firstc. g. aft, UT, . The name in done in the
case of compounds, but within brackets.
3. Whore two words, though idonticul in form, diffor ontirely in meaning, they are
generally ropeated us separate words; e. g. u,ft. In a fow cases they have boon
grouped together.
4. Words which are used as adverbs, but dorived by eso-infections from a noun or
adjective oro given under the noun or adjective; 6. 7. STRUT under GNC. In some
cases they are given within brookets before the compounds, if any.
5. The several meanings of a word, where they can be sufficiently distinguished
from ono nuothor, are givon separately and marked by black Arabia figures. Moro
shades of meaning are not considered as mparato sonsos, but in such cases several
synonyms are given tinder the same monning, from which the roader will have to make
his choice. Whero the shades of menning are sufliciontly broad, they aro numbored
38 separato moanings.
6. The meanings of words are arranged in the order of their importance and
frequency of us. It has not, of course, been possible to do so in every case, but
the systom has been gonerally followed.
7. (c) Compounds are grouped under the first word in the compounds, in the
alphabotical order of their second mombers, the black dash before them donoting
that first word: 6. 9. -ETT under af means SATI,
fa under U means verft .
N. B.-In giving compounds, the changes, which the final lottors undergo, c. y. the
dropping, asimila tion of lotters . ROHsumed: eg-अपर undler पूर्व stands for पूर्वापर, -गति:
under अधस्, for अधोगतिः ko. In sonio case the compound words, whore not csily
intelligible, are given in full within brackets; se , gae, IT &c.
(1) Whero il compound itself is used as the first member of other compounds, there
letters are given inmediately after, their second member being preceded by which
represents tho first compound; 0. 5. , 3 &c. given under for stand not for FIFA or
far ICT, but for

) aro givon separately in their proper places, but under the radical word.
8. All words formal by Krit or Taddhita affixes are given separately; thus , HU,
BAH, atataar, FET &o, will be found not as compounds uncler , 17 &c. but as
soparate wouls.
9. (a) In the onse of substantives the noninative singular, wherever it may at once
donote the gender, is given throughout the vinarger, unless followorl by ./.
indlicating masculino gunden und the auspro neuter gondor. Where the nominative
singular is not indicative of the gouder, it is specified as w. /. or n. as tho
caso may be. All substantives onding in consonants have their gonders specified 18
l. or.
() Tho feminine forms of nouns are usually given a separate leading words, but in
some cases, especially in the first five or six hundred pages, they aro given under
the leading word after the masculine gender. But where the feminino baso enters
into compounds, it is invariably given separately: d. . .

- 210. In tho chto of adjootives the simple boxe only is given. The feminine of the
majority of adjectives in 3 ends in 271, and adjectives ending in or havo generally
tho so me base for all genders. In all such cases the Himple base is given, tho
feminino being formed according to similar substantive bayes. All irregular
feminines are, however, donoted within brackets. Adjectives onding in o a form
their fominines regularly in at, it or eit; where irregular, they are donoted
within brackets.
11. () In the caso of verbs, the Arabic figuro boforo P., Aan U. denotes the
conjugation to which the root bolongx; P. donoling Parasuipada, A. Ātmanopada, and
U. Ubhayapada (P. and Ã. ). Don. stands for Denominative, and hero the 3rd person
sing, present tenso is given throughout.
(2) Under cach root tho 3rd person singular present tense and of the Perfect,
Aorist, two Futures and Infinitivo in the case of important roots, and the past
passive participle wherovor notoworthy, are given throughout. The forms of the
Paste, Coal and Denklerative, wherever noteworthy, are given after them, or after
the senses of the primitivo base, where thero is any peculiarity in their sons.
(o) Vorby formed by profixing propositions to roots are given separately in their
own alphabetical order, except in cases where there are no derivatives from such
vorbs.
(a) Roots sometimes change their forin or pada (voice) or both, when tscd in
particular sonses, or when proceded by particulir preposition. Such changes aro
denoted within brackets.
(2) Whon a root, belongs to different conjugations with different meanings. Roman
figures are used to mark this difference, (cf. , UT, UT &c. ), the root being
repoatod only onco.
12. (a) All possiblo derivatives from a word are not always given when they may bo
easily supplied, more cypecially in the case of potential partive participles
(formed by 454, 4 and ), présent participlog and abstract nouns from adjectives
(formed by adding ar, 9 or 1). Whero there is any peculiarity cither in the
formation or moaning of these derivatives, they aro given. But in many cases the
student will have to supply the form, according to the general rules givon in
Grammar.
() Similarly all the cquivalente given under the radical word are not always
ropoated under the dorivatives; they may, if necessary, bo accortained by a
referonce to the radical word.
