CHAPTER- 2 ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

Day 3
Quick Revision of the previous day work
 Addition is the process of calculating the total of two or
more numbers or amounts.
 The numbers that are added in an addition problem are
called addends. The result is called the sum.

 Change in the order of the addends does not change the

sum.
For example 225+136=361 ;136+225=361

 When zero is added to any number, the sum is the number

itself.For example, 0+652=652

Word Problems
 A word problem is a few sentences describing a 'real-life'
scenario where a problem needs to be solved by way of a
mathematical calculation.
 Word problems also help children to familiarise
themselves with mathematical language (vocabulary like
fewer, altogether, difference, more, share, multiply,
subtract, equal, reduced, etc.).
Example 1- In a book fair, there are 3,42,568 books in English
language and 1,52,243 books in languages other than English. Find
the total number of books in the fair.

Sol- Here in this example we have to find the total no. of books it means we
have to add both languages books.
1 1
L TTH Th H T O
Number of books in English language 3 4 2 5 68
Number of books in languages other than English + 1 5 2 343
Total number of books 4 9 4 9 1 1

Thus, there are 4,94,911 books in the book fair.

Example 2- In a city,there are 53,148 men, 51,325 women and

22,426 children. How many people are there in all live in the city?
1 1 1
Sol L TTH Th H T O
Number of men in the city 5 3 4 1 8
Number of women in the city 5 1 3 25
Number of children in the city + 2 24 26
1 2 7 1 6 9
Total people in the city

Thus, 1,27,169 people live in the city

Dear children practice exercise 2.1 with the help of previous
lesson plan.
Consider it as your self-learning exercise.
Any apprehensions or doubts ask your teachers over video
calling or messaging.
