Supporting Our Members
Member Outreach

Chain of Custody certificate holders automatically become members of PEFC UK and have full
voting rights at our Annual General Meeting. By investing in certification, our members have
demonstrated their commitment to the responsible sourcing of the forest products they trade in.
In doing so, they are helping to support sustainable forest management around the globe. The
PEFC UK team recognises and appreciates this investment and is therefore keen to support
members. Each year, we try to visit as many of our members as possible to learn what more
we can do to assist them. We also demonstrate our appreciation by providing training support,
prompt customer service and a library of materials and tools to help companies promote their
certified credentials.

Meeting Our Members

Stakeholder Workshops
Throughout the year, we host regular
training workshops around the country.
These half-day seminars are free to
attend and cover a range of topics
including both sustainable forest
management and chain of custody
certification and the use of the PEFC
label. Participants typically include

In 2019, the PEFC family celebrated the organisation’s 20th
anniversary. During the summer, we marked this special birthday by
hosting a celebratory dinner for our most longstanding members
in our home city of Sheffield. Certificates of appreciation were
awarded to the companies who were amongst the first to gain PEFC UK Chairman

2019 Annual Stakeholder
Meeting
In October, we held our 12th Annual
Stakeholder Meeting in London. The event
entitled Forests: Providing Innovative
Solutions to Global Challenges, saw
over 100 members and other stakeholders
join this half-day event. Keynote speaker
Kai Lintunen, from the Finnish Forest
Association, briefed the audience on

environmental challenges.

Without doubt, one of the most fundamental environmental issues facing the world today is the amount of plastic waste choking
our oceans, lakes and rivers and contributing to unsustainable levels of landfill. BillerudKorsnäs’ Tom Hallam showcased some of
the latest environmentally-friendly, paper-based, packaging products designed to replace plastic alternatives. Rémi Sournier, PEFC
International’s Development Manager reported on the projects PEFC has invested in that are helping drive demand for forest
certification in the developing world. Finally, as the PEFC programme celebrated its 20th anniversary, Alun Watkins, closed the
session with a look back over the organisation’s progress over the past 20 years and what the future may hold in the years to come.

Helping our Members Promote Their PEFC Credentials

Promotional Materials
Our members are valued for their investment in certification, so when they
asked for tools to help promote their PEFC credentials, we were keen
to assist. Towards the end of 2019, we therefore published a catalogue
showcasing the range of materials we can now supply.

We have a wide range of printed, digital and web-based materials available

free of charge. These are designed to suit all aspects of our members and
stakeholders’ areas of interest, including posters, brochures, sector-specific
publications, handy factsheets and video content. These can be viewed in
the members area of our website:

3
Market Outreach
Market Outreach

Promoting the assurances that PEFC certification brings to forest products remains a key
objective for the PEFC UK team. Consequently, the Board allocates a third of our annual income
to this crucial area of our work. The PEFC brand is increasingly recognised and understood in
the UK marketplace, providing added value to hundreds of UK companies who have invested
in certification and are helping develop a healthy future for the world’s forests. The following
provides a snapshot of our market outreach activities over the past twelve months.

Forestry
Field Trip to Scottish Borders
In May, James Jones & Sons and Scottish Woodlands once again hosted
our annual field trip to the Scottish borders. The visit aimed to give
participants a better understanding of sustainable forest management in
the UK and the dual Chain of Custody certification process. Delegates,
drawn from the UK forestry and primary processing sectors, explored
how the supply chain could be simplified in terms of paperwork, claims
and volume control in order to improve business resilience.

2019 Royal Forestry Society (RFS) Award

The winner of the 2019 RFS Award for Excellence in Forestry
Education and Learning was Little Birds Forest Nursery – an outdoor
nursery in Bury, West Sussex. Here, the young pupils play and learn
in the woods every day, developing knowledge about flora, fauna
and trees. They collect their own firewood and use tools to process
green wood for making their own toys, tools and crafts. PEFC UK
Samantha and James Lovegrove from Little Birds Nursery co-sponsored the award with Forestry Journal. Founded in 1882,
collect the award from sponsors John McNee, Editor Forestry
Journal (left) and Alun Watkins, PEFC UK (right)
with almost 4,000 members, the RFS is the UK’s largest forestry
education charity.

Textiles
In May, PEFC welcomed representatives of the UK’s leading high street
retailers who gathered to attend our first event for the fashion sector in
London. Currently, almost 65% of global fabric consumption consists of
synthetic fibres derived from fossil fuels while the majority of the remaining
is made of cotton – a water and pesticide-intensive crop. Organisations
such as the United Nations, consider renewable and responsibly-sourced wood fibres to be part of the solution to transforming
fashion into a more sustainable industry. At present, only 7% of textiles are produced from wood fibres, but this is expected to
grow to 30% by 2023. The role that sustainable forestry can play in providing tools and guidance for responsible producers,
fashion brands and consumers, makes the fashion sector a crucial one for PEFC to engage with.

Timber and Construction
Responsible Timber Sourcing CPDs
Timber is an increasingly popular and low carbon construction choice for
architects, structural engineers and material specifiers. During 2019 we
worked with independent construction consultant Charlie Law, to develop
a professional training module on responsible timber procurement for
architects and building designers, and for all those wishing to use more
timber in their projects. Charlie has worked in the construction sector for over
30 years, and has extensive industry knowledge having worked for BAM, Kier
and Lendlease. The resulting fully-accredited, one-hour CPD Course has now

been delivered to over 400 construction and design professionals at some of
the best-known architecture and engineering practices across the UK.

World Architecture Festival 2019 – Best Use of

Certified Timber Prize
Last December, eleven finalists presented their projects to a special jury at
the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Amsterdam – all vying for the Best
Use of Certified Timber Prize, sponsored for the second year in succession
by PEFC. The jury that included Mark Thomson from Eco Effective
Solutions, Keith Bradley from Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Jonathan
Coote from Warren & Mahoney and Hattie Hartman from Architects’
Journal, heard presentations from each of the shortlisted entries before the
winner was announced at a Gala Dinner, attended by 1,000 guests.

The winning project was the Pingelly Recreation and Cultural Centre
(PRACC) in Pingelly, Western Australia, designed by architects Iredale
Pedersen Hook and Advanced Timber Concepts Studio. The jury commended the project’s authentic use of sustainable timber in a
project which is the hub of the local community. Two UK projects also made the shortlist, the Macallan Distillery and Visitor Centre,
designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and the Royal Opera House – Open Up project – designed by Stanton Williams.

Talk to Me Sculptures

Talk To Me Sculptures
Speak PEFC-Certification
In 2019, multi-award-winning British designer Steuart Padwick Mayor of London Sadiq Khan
congratulates Steuart Padwick
once again teamed up with mental health charity Time to Change,
to create two stunning timber sculptures in central London made
from PEFC-certified Douglas Fir.

Erected in central London, the two 5.5m high, glulam sculptures, greeted
locals and commuters alike on King’s Boulevard in Kings Cross during
September 2019, as part of the London Design Festival. The timber
figures were made from PEFC-certified Douglas Fir supplied by leading
French timber supplier, Piveteaubois and supported by France-Douglas –
a trade association established to promote use of French Douglas Fir.

The sculptures – entitled Talk to Me – were interactive and aimed to

further a conversation about the capital’s mental health. As passers-
by approached the breathing, interactive giant cuboid wooden figures,
a proximity sensor was triggered, and they began to voice poignant
and uplifting words. These conversations start to crack the ‘burden’ to
release a glowing light.

To address some of the many design challenges, Padwick worked

with Ramboll for the structural engineering, to ensure the three tonne
sculptures could be delivered and erected within an hour, to minimise
disruption, and with Hoare Lea to deliver the complex sound and
lighting. Padwick chose PEFC-certified Douglas Fir for the figures to
convey a warmth and humanity. This was in stark contrast to the hard
cuboid shapes and ‘concrete’ blocks borne on their shoulders. In reality,
the blocks were made from natural acrylic stone donated by James
Latham PLC.

The series progresses from the standing figure carrying the burden on its shoulders to a seated figure resting against it. “Many
of us carry issues and burdens that hold us down and hold us back,” said Steuart Padwick. “Even when the burden is not overtly
holding them down it is rarely far away. That is why one piece has the burden clearly on the shoulders, and with the other
sitting piece, the burden is to one side
– perhaps forgotten for a moment but
always near.”

Talk To Me was designed and built

within 12 weeks. PEFC was proud
to support such an imaginative
project, highlighting the importance of
recognising mental health issues while
demonstrating the versatility of Douglas
Fir as a sustainable construction
material. The figures have now moved
to Cody Dock, London’s newest park in
Canning Town on the banks of the River
Lea and form part of an East London
sculpture trail.
