Combustion Liner Upgrade

Applicable: All MS6001B Gas Turbines ML: 0703

with Phase 6 DLN combustion
liners, drawing 108E4256.

PURPOSE

Notify users that a combustion liner upgrade is available to increase creep life and
minimise repair costs.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

At one site with the 108E4256 Phase 6 DLN combustion liners, a standard 8000 hour
combustion inspection revealed the combustion liner sleeve had deformed. Analysis of
the bulged combustion liner showed the deformation was due to creep.

RECOMMENDATIONS

To increase combustion liner creep life, users may choose to have their 108E4256
Phase 6 DLN combustion liners upgraded at the next combustion inspection. Liners will
be upgraded to the current production configuration which incorporates an increased
wall thickness to increase creep life.

For units that run in extended lean-lean mode on gas fuel and units that run in normal
lean-lean mode on oil fuel, controls changes are also required as part of this upgrade.

Details of the upgrade follow:

1. The first part of the upgrade increases combustion liner wall thickness to 0.090
inches at the location shown in Figure 1. This increase in aft liner thickness
enhances creep strength by an order of magnitude. Existing 108E4256
combustion liners can be upgraded by removing the current thin wall, larger
diameter aft section, and replacing it with the thick wall section as shown in
Figure 1. The drawing number for the new combustion liner with 0.090 inch liner
wall thickness is 112E1076GXX (the group number depends on the level of Nox).
Any 108E4256 combustion liners modified to he 0.090 inch wall thickness should
be re-identified to 112E1076 with the appropriate group number.

2. The second portion of the upgrade is applicable only to units that run in
extended lean-lean mode on gas fuel and units that run in normal lean-lean
mode on oil fuel. For these units a control modification is also required to
change the fuel split in extended lean-lean operation on gas or normal lean-lean
operation on oil from 60% (primary) to 50%. This control change reduces
combustion liner metal temperatures and reduces the potential for creep. For
changing the oil split, an orifice will need to be installed in the primary fuel lines.
For gas split changes, only controls changes are required. The fuel split
(primary/secondary flow) for normal lean-lean operation on gas fuel will stay at
60%.

Contact your local JBE representative to discuss the option of either upgrading existing
combustion liners by modifying as described in this FTI or replacing with new combustion
liners.
