Guide to Class 1: TinkerCAD Intro

Course Outcome
This course will introduce students to the basic of 3D Design. By the end of this class students
should be able to create a simple 3D design using the basic shapes in TinkerCAD.

Teaching Tips
It’s a good idea to walk through the tutorials step by step. Make sure that all students are easily able
to use the mouse and the basic tools in TinkerCAD.

Introduction to 3D Design
Since the 1960s computer-aided design (CAD) software has been used to create 3D designs.
At the start companies such as car manufacturers used 3D design do create products.

Later in the 1980s the 3D Printer was developed. Only in the early 2000s were the first
commercial 3D printers produced. This allowed anyone to create 3D creations on their own!

Teacher Tip: You may wish to have a default account for students to use if they
forget. Alternatively have a default login format and/or keep a record.
TinkerCAD Tutorials
Now that you’re logged in it’s time
to start using TinkerCAD!

To learn how to use TinkerCAD,


simply go to ‘Learn’ and do the
tutorials that you see on the right.

Teacher Tip: Go through each tutorial along with the students. As you walk through the
tutorials, make sure each student understands how to use each tool.
TinkerCAD: Workplane
In TinkerCAD the area to place objects is called the Workplane.
Here are three ways to change the view of your Workplane

Rotate Zoom Pan


Right Click + Move Scroll Wheel + Up/Down Shift + Right Click + Move

Teacher Tip: For each action students must click and hold while moving the mouse.
TinkerCAD: Moving Objects
Here are a few ways to make moving objects easier!
Move Up (Z direction)
Click object and move top arrow

Move by 1 Grid Size Select Multiple Objects


Click object and use the arrows Left click and drag box

Teacher Tip: Students can alter the grid size in the bottom right corner.
TinkerCAD: Altering Objects
Here are a few ways to make moving objects easier!

Rotate Object Resize Object


Click object and change the Click object & move squares on edge or
curved arrows that appear select a dimension and type a number.

Teacher Tip: Both these tools are fairly useful, but may be tricky to use.
So make sure every student is able to use them.
