PLANNING & TEACHING (APPLICATION TO PRACTICE)

1. Using the following outline, detail the guidelines/strategies you will implement when
developing lesson plans and instructional practices in preparation for your first year in the
classroom:

A) Lesson Planning:

1) 1) Detail one strategy you will use to introduce lesson plans, instructional
practice or new concepts to students.
I will try to incorporate knowledge integration into every lesson I teach. This will
be a key instructional practice that will keep students reeled into the material. I
will always try to build upon prior knowledge and reinforce things that my
students have already learned. I will also try and incorporate as many subject
areas into one lesson as possible. Students have a better chance of remembering
new material if it was relatable and the use of knowledge integration can help
bridge gaps in material.

2) What effect will it have on students, and how will it impact their ability to
learn? Be specific and provide a concrete measurable positive impact on learning.
By connecting to prior knowledge, students have the opportunity to build upon
what they already know and make connections to the new material. This greatly
increases the chances that they remember the new material for the next lesson and
learn and master the material. This will in effect create a positive impact on
learning. They will also be more interested in the material as it will be relatable.
Moreover, I will also let students use their own knowledge to do tasks and guide
them in the direction of how it will connect with new things.
3) Identify why the strategy you provided is important in terms of the theories and
concepts discussed in class. Support your reasoning with a quote properly cited
from the text or other academic resource.

This strategy fits into Piaget’s theory as it will be guided discovery learning since
I will be allowing students to perform activities based on their own experiences
and existing knowledge. To support my reasoning, the quote “Knowledge
integration is an important learning mechanism which should be activated and
strengthened by instruction”- Sciencedirect.com fits. It's important to keep
material relevant and interesting to help students learn.

4) Describe how your strategy meets one TPE. Identify the TPE number and
heading. Also include the exact citation, in quotes, from the specific section of the
TPE to which you're referring and how the strategy meets that TPE.

TPE 4: Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for All Students

Knowledge integration aligns with the goals in TPE 4.3 “Design and implement
instruction and assessment that reflects the interconnectedness of academic
content areas….as applicable to the subject area of instruction.” This fits into my
strategy because I will be designing instruction based on prior knowledge to
create connection to the new material that I will be teaching.

B) Student Engagement
1) Detail one strategy you will use in lesson planning or implementation to
promote student engagement?
One strategy I will use to promote student engagement is using visual arts to keep
students engaged and interested in the subject matter. This can be done through
the use of videos on youtube, drawing, painting and other performing arts.

2) What effect will it have on students, and how will it impact their ability to
learn? Be specific and provide a concrete measurable positive impact on learning.
This will have a positive effect because visual arts usually provide a reliable way
to get the attention and piques the curiosity of the students. It will also allow for
students to be exposed to more things and in the process learn more. They get
more engaged and can also have a new way to express their mind, thoughts and
emotions, letting them feel more connected to the subject matter.

3) Identify why the strategy you provided is important in terms of the theories and
concepts discussed in class. Support your reasoning with a quote properly cited
from the text or other academic resource.

This strategy applies to Piaget’s Cognitive Learning Theory because the method is
beneficial for those students who are more visual learners. Giving students
multiple forms of instruction allows for students of different learning abilities to
excel, which is applicable to “discovery type learning.” A quote that fits with this
is, “visuals help students better understand written words by providing more
context, thus helping them connect meaningful input to a particular topic or
text.”-vistahigherlearning.com

4) Describe how your strategy meets one TPE. Identify the TPE number and
heading. Also include the exact citation, in quotes, from the specific section of the
TPE to which you're referring and how the strategy meets that TPE.

TPE 3: Understanding and Organizing Subject Matter for Student Learning

This teaching strategy connects to the goals listed in TPE 3.3. “Plan, design,
implement, and monitor instruction consistent with current subject-specific
pedagogy in the content area(s) of instruction... including integrating the visual
and performing arts...” This TPE relates because of the integration of a variety of
teaching methods and finding ways to incorporate academic subject matter in
ways that will benefit the students and the lesson that is being taught, in this case
using visual arts.

C) Use of Multimedia and Technology

1) Detail one strategy you will use in lesson planning or implementation to
promote the appropriate use of multimedia and technology to enhance lessons.
I will allow students to complete projects on their individual computers or tablets.
We will also incorporate Computer Lab visits and projects into our weekly
routine. All students will have equal access to the computers and computer
applications through the duration of the school day and week.

2) What effect will it have on students, and how will it impact their ability to
learn? Be specific and provide a concrete measurable positive impact on learning.
This will have a positive effect on students through their knowledge of computer
and technology literacy. This will provide alternative means of instruction and
allow for students who are better visual learners to engage with the material.
Students will also get a more productive learning environment as they will be
familiar with the use of technology and can use it for more means, like finding
more information about a research project by themselves.

3) Identify why the strategy you provided is important in terms of the theories and
concepts discussed in class. Support your reasoning with a quote properly cited
from the text or other academic resource.

This strategy fits into Erickson’s theory as I will be allowing for freedom and
expression when they use technology. Students will be able to look for their own
material online that they want to incorporate into the assignment and this way be
more excited about the work. “Technology ushers in fundamental structural
changes that can be integral to achieving significant improvements in
productivity”- Ed.gov Students

4) Describe how your strategy meets one TPE. Identify the TPE number and
heading. Also include the exact citation, in quotes, from the specific section of the
TPE to which you're referring and how the strategy meets that TPE

TPE 3: Understanding and Organizing Subject Matter for Student Learning.

TPE 3. 6. “Use and adapt resources, standards-aligned instructional materials, and

a range of technology, including assistive technology, to facilitate students'
equitable access to the curriculum.” This fits with the strategy as technology will
be used to fit into students better learning. It will help to facilitate material for
them as well as they will be doing their own discovery.

D) Use of Authentic Materials and Manipulatives

1) Detail one strategy you will use in lesson planning or implementation to
promote the appropriate use of authentic materials and manipulatives to enhance
lessons.
One strategy that I will use in lesson planning or implementation to promote the
appropriate use of authentic materials and manipulatives to enhance lessons is to
make sure the lesson requires active participation of each student using materials
that they encounter with in their daily lives.

2) What effect will it have on students, and how will it impact their ability to
learn? Be specific and provide a concrete measurable positive impact on learning.
The effect that it will have on students is that it will allow for the students to fully
engage in the activity and lesson, they will be more interested. They will be using
their own words and providing summaries/explanations that will help to make
sure that the students are actually participating and gaining knowledge through
hands-on experiences, and in result, they will be developing their
mindset/comprehension of material discussed or presented in class and how it is
related to the outside world. They will be using materials such as newspapers,
videos, menus, job applications, etc.

3) Identify why the strategy you provided is important in terms of the theories and
concepts discussed in class. Support your reasoning with a quote properly cited
from the text or other academic resource.

The strategy that I provided is important in terms of Erickson’s theory because he

supports taking initiative and giving opportunities to perform tasks on your own.
This is something that I plan on allowing my students to do. I will be providing
them with materials from their daily lives and have them complete assignments
using their own way of looking at things which will lead to active participation as
the students will be more focused on the lessons as they will be using
authentic/manipulative materials that they come across everyday. A quote that
supports my reasoning is, “Authentic materials are real and so more interesting
and motivating...they present the type of language that the student will meet
outside the classroom.” -Peter Beech

4) Describe how your strategy meets one TPE. Identify the TPE number and
heading. Also include the exact citation, in quotes, from the specific section of the
TPE to which you're referring and how the strategy meets that TPE.

TPE #1: Engaging and Supporting All Students in Learning

Element 3: “Promote student’s critical and creative thinking and analysis through
activities that provide opportunities for inquiry, problem solving, responding to
and framing meaningful questions, and reflection.” This fits into my strategy
because through the use of authentic materials, I am pushing towards the use of
creative thinking of my students and for them to analyze on their own the
significance of things. This will help them gain a better understanding of the
materials as they will see how they can be used in more than one setting,
(ex:weather channel can be used to write a research report) and the students will
use their creativity to complete these assignments and reflect.

E) Peer Collaboration
1) Detail one strategy you will use in lesson planning or implementation to
promote peer collaboration to enhance learning.
One strategy that I will use in lesson planning or implementation to promote peer
collaboration to enhance learning is by using collaborative learning activities.

2) What effect will it have on students, and how will it impact their ability to
learn? Be specific and provide a concrete measurable positive impact on learning.
This will help because students need encouragement and a reason to work
together. If the activity is to be completed with a partner, they have no other
choice but to work with someone else. Also, if the activity is a bit hard, students
are motivated to share ideas, discuss them and debate their answers and learn
from each other in the process. Students can also be partnered with advanced
students so that they are helping others understand better. They must find the
answers to these activities through partnership, therefore resulting in peer
collaboration and more learning/understanding of material.

3) Identify why the strategy you provided is important in terms of the theories and
concepts discussed in class. Support your reasoning with a quote properly cited
from the text or other academic resource.

This strategy is important in terms of Vygotsky’s theory since he encourages

social interactions, in this case it would be peer collaboration. Vygotsky’s theory
mentions that if a student can’t do something on their own, they can learn from a
peer who knows the material and be guided. Through collaborative learning
activities, the students can learn from each other while working together and can
even improve on skills that they were having difficulty with. A quote that supports
my reasoning is “Collaboration allows us to know more than we are capable of
knowing by ourselves.” -Paul Solarz

4) Describe how your strategy meets one TPE. Identify the TPE number and
heading. Also include the exact citation, in quotes, from the specific section of the
TPE to which you're referring and how the strategy meets that TPE.

TPE #2: Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning
Element 2: “Create learning environments that promote productive student
learning, encourage positive interactions among students…” This fits into my
strategy because it is mentioned that in order to have positive and productive
learning, students should be able to interact with one another. This is done
through peer collaboration, as it consists of students working together to achieve a
similar goal or simply doing an activity that was assigned to be completed in
partners. Peer collaborations or interactions among students help establish a
positive climate of learning, which is something I plan to achieve with my
strategy of using collaborative learning activities.
F) Providing for the Diversity of Learning Styles and Needs
1) Detail one strategy you will use in lesson planning or implementation to
support diversity of learning styles and needs.
One strategy that I will use in lesson planning or implementation to support
diversity of learning styles and needs is to incorporate various methods into my
teaching so this way I can reach the majority of my students.

2) What effect will it have on students, and how will it impact their ability to
learn? Be specific and provide a concrete measurable positive impact on learning.
The effect that this will have on students is that there will be different ways for
students to access the material, resulting in a broader audience which is actually
comprehending what the lessons are. If I provide various methods such as visual,
auditory, or kinesthetic, I’m able to connect students to what I’m teaching, and
this could lead to encouragement for participation in the class or interaction with
classmates. Using various methods will allow me to reach different learning
styles.

3) Identify why the strategy you provided is important in terms of the theories and
concepts discussed in class. Support your reasoning with a quote properly cited
from the text or other academic resource.

The strategy that I provided is important in terms of Piaget’s theory as he

encouraged opportunities for discovery and to help meet students’ cognitive level.
By providing various methods/activities that accommodate different learning
styles, I am paying attention to what each student needs. I am recognizing that
students learn differently and adjust material according to what they need and
what will work best for them in terms of understanding what is being taught in the
classroom. A quote that supports my reasoning is “Every child has a different
learning style and pace. Each child is unique, not only capable of learning, but
also capable of succeeding.” -Robert John Meehan
4) Describe how your strategy meets one TPE. Identify the TPE number and
heading. Also include the exact citation, in quotes, from the specific section of the
TPE to which you're referring and how the strategy meets that TPE.

TPE #1: Engaging and Supporting All Students in Learning

Element 4: “Using a variety of developmentally and ability-appropriate

instructional strategies, resources...to support access to the curriculum for a wide
range of learners…” This fits into my strategy because I will be using a variety of
strategies/resources/methods that will best benefit the students based on what it is
that they need in order to achieve academic success. If I provide diversity in terms
of how I present lessons, I will also be reaching more of my students and
accommodating to their own different learning style.

G) Assessment of Instructional Understanding

1) Detail one strategy related to assessment of instructional understanding that
you will use in lesson planning.
When lesson planning, the strategy related to assessment of instructional
understanding that I will use are formative assessments such as exit tickets.

2) What effect will it have on students, and how will it impact their ability to
learn? Be specific and provide a concrete measurable positive impact on learning.
Using exit tickets will allow students to share their understanding of the lesson
without being embarrassed about sharing their misunderstandings with the entire
class. Exit tickets let students ask questions and ask for help in private which will
make them more comfortable to speak out.

3) Identify why the strategy you provided is important in terms of the theories and
concepts discussed in class. Support your reasoning with a quote properly cited
from the text or other academic resource.

Providing students a personal and private way to show their understanding of a

lesson or ask any possible questions is a way of giving them the opportunity to do
things on their own like Erickson’s theory mentions. Students feel free to let the
teacher know where they stand in terms of the lesson without fear of ridicule from
other students. This might make them more inclined to participate and put forth
more effort in the classroom and this increases their motivation as a whole.
NWEA states, “The exit ticket is a great in class assessment tool that can also help
plan instruction. Teachers gain understanding of who knows what and if certain
topics need additional instruction time — something that can be lost when one or
two consistent hand-raisers suggest learning proficiency for the entire classroom.”
This applies because those who are more introverted, rather than students who
constantly participate, feel more comfortable in sharing.

4) Describe how your strategy meets one TPE. Identify the TPE number and
heading. Also include the exact citation, in quotes, from the specific section of the
TPE to which you're referring and how the strategy meets that TPE.

This meets TPE #2: Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student
Learning- Element #3 “Establish, maintain, and monitor inclusive learning
environments that are physically, mentally, intellectually, and emotionally healthy
and safe to enable all students to learn.” Using exit tickets promotes inclusive
learning because students might feel more comfortable sharing their opinions or
questions through this method making it more ‘emotionally safe.’

H) Practice and Feedback

1) Detail one strategy you will use to ensure students are given adequate
opportunity to practice new concepts OR how you will ensure timely and
adequate feedback is provided for all students.
One strategy I will use to ensure students are given proper feedback is to use
rubrics for assessments.

2) What effect will it have on students, and how will it impact their ability to
learn? Be specific and provide a concrete measurable positive impact on learning.
Using rubrics to give adequate feedback for students will impact student learning
positively because they can understand what exactly is expected of them before
the assignment is completed. Then afterwards, they are aware of what they need
to improve on. Rubrics allow for more specific feedback which will later increase
the quality of their work and improve their scores.

3) Identify why the strategy you provided is important in terms of the theories and
concepts discussed in class. Support your reasoning with a quote properly cited
from the text or other academic resource.

Teaching On Purpose argues, “Through all students being given specific scoring
guidelines, students are able to know exactly what is expected of them and refer
back to them as they make progress in their assignment or project.” Rubrics can
be applied to Kohlberg’s Moral Development because as the teacher, you are
setting specific expectations for student work which can be compared to setting
rules and standards in the classroom. These rules and expectations for student
work improves their academic development.

4) Describe how your strategy meets one TPE. Identify the TPE number and
heading. Also include the exact citation, in quotes, from the specific section of the
TPE to which you're referring and how the strategy meets that TPE.

This strategy of rubric feedback meets TPE #5: Assessing Student Learning-
Element #3 “Involve all students in self-assessment and reflection on their
learning goals and progress and provide students with opportunities to revise or
reframe their work based on assessment feedback.” Rubrics help students reflect
on the goals set for them and the feedback will assist them in revising work or
finishing new assignments in the future.

I) Draft a comprehensive plan and schedule for the first day (8:30am-2:50pm) of
class that includes:
