Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: STORY MOUNTAIN

Objectives:
Students will be able to describe key characters, the setting and the key plot of a story.
Students will be able to the cause and effect relationships of a story
State Standards:

Standard 8: Analyze characters, settings, events, and ideas as they develop and interact within a particular
context.

8.1 Read or listen closely to:

b. describes how cultural context influences characters, setting, and the development of the plot; and

c. explains how cause and effect relationships affect the development of plot.

Context:
I am teaching this lesson because it goes with our fairytale and folktale unit. This will be the first
thing we learn before we start going through folktales and fairytales. This is important because it
will help us analysis the stories that we go over. It will also help the students when we write our
own fairy or folk tales.
Data:
Students will be grouped by their literacy groups. Their literacy groups are based by their
performance in different literacy tests. The groups will change if the literacy assessments change.
The data from this could change a group and see where my students are in understanding the
parts of a story.

Procedures:
Introduction (5 minutes):
All of the students will comeback from their special and quietly sit at their desks after
they are all at their desks. Students will be called to the carpet by literacy groups. Once
everyone is seated I will announce what we are doing.
Teacher Directed (25 minutes):
Once I introduce the topic all students will have the Teacher Directed portion at the same
time. I will introduce what the setting, the plot and character. Also introduce what a cause
of effect is. This will be done by showing a diagram and then showing some videos.

The videos will be showed on YouTube on the smartboard. After each video we will
discuss it.

Collaborative (25 minutes):


Students will read the short stories in their literacy groups and fill out their worksheets.
Students will collaborate with their group to answer the questions about the story. Then
they will use their List of Character Traits to create their own characters and put the
groups charter on the wow work wall.
Students will use crayons and paper to draw their character.
Independent Digital (25 minutes):
Video-: cause and effect
Students will grab their assigned iPads and watch the YouTube video on cause and effect
and then read the story assigned to their google form. After reading the story they will
answer the questions about the story and cause and effect. After they finish if they will go
on freckle to finish the assignment they are given by me.
Freckle
Closure (10 minutes):
After students finish, they will put away all the materials at the center they are at and then
go to the carpet. This is where groups will present their characters they made up in their
group. After the students will get ready for lunch and recess.
Rationale:
The first app I want to talk about is Freckle. Freckle supports the students work by being
able to assign the students work that goes with the standards. The assignments make the
learning like a game. This changes for students need. This app also allows the teacher to
block items on the app and watch what the students are doing. This app is very safe and
efficient for students.
The second website is google forms. Google forms is secure and safe because it is listed
in the google classroom. This gives the students the signal if they got the question wrong
and the opportunity to do it again. And it is very easy to see what the students are doing.
