Fuel filter housing, description

CAUTION
Do not use the starter motor to bleed the fuel system

CAUTION
Do not use the hand pump when the engine is running

The fuel filter housing has automatic breather and non-return valves to reduce fuel spills when changing filter. The manual hand
pump is only used when the system is completely drained of fuel. For example, following downtime or if the operator has run the
machine dry of diesel fuel. The pressure sensor is located after the main filter and is used to measure the pressure for fuel feed
to the injectors.
Valve in pre-filter nipple: The pre-filter nipple has a non-return valve (A) which, due to its weight, falls down and stops draining
of fuel through the filter nipple when the filter is removed or empty. When the fuel pump is running, both fuel and any air in the
system are pumped, and the valve will be lifted from its seat, enabling fuel and air to pass.
Valve in main filter: The main filter nipple has a valve with double function (B), consisting of a non-return valve (same as for the
pre-filter, se description above) and a sleeve for automatic breather. The valve and sleeve can assume three positions according
to the figure:
1 Filter change; engine off; since the fuel pump is not running, no fuel/air flows in the system. Both the sleeve and the valve are,
due to their weight, in the bottom position. This prevents spills when removing the main filter.
2 Engine start; the fuel pump is running and pumps mainly air through the main filter nipple. The non-return valve will be lifted
from its seat by the air flow, which opens a passage upward to the breather hose. Since the sleeve is heavier, it will not lift until
the system is bled free from air and fuel starts to flow through the system.
3 Fully flooded; both the sleeve and the non-return valve are in their top positions. Since complete air breathing has taken
place, the two valves are lifted by the even fuel flow through the nipple. With the sleeve in its top position, fuel will now flow
through the main opening while the non-return valve keeps the breather opening closed. Thereafter, the fuel system is bled of
air continuously through the breather valve on the cylinder head.

The fuel system is equipped with two filters, a primary filter with water trap, and a secondary filter.
The filters have a common filter head that is located on the machine frame. On the filter head there is a hand pump which only is
used when the fuel system has been emptied.
On the secondary filter side, there is a fuel pressure sensor that measures the fuel feed pressure to the injectors.
In the water trap, there is a drain valve and a water indicator.
