QUESTION 2
(15 marks)

Design a Double reinforced rectangular beam to carry a maximum design

moment of 300 kNm. The beam is limited to a cross section of 250 mm x 460mm,
having an effective depth of 400 mm. fc’ = 30 MPa, fy = 400 MPa. Use steel covering
measured from bottom of beam to center of tension bars equal to 60 mm. Use also 60
mm steel cover to compression bars. Use Y16 for compression bars and Y36 for
tension bars.

load it could carry for the following end support conditions.
a) Both ends are fixed (ke = 0.70)
b) Both ends are pinned (ke = 1.0)
c) One end fixed and other end pinned (ke = 0.85)

QUESTION 6
(15 marks)
A 7.50 meters steel truss is shown in Figure Q6. By method of joint/method of section and by
Maxwell truss diagram, the maximum axial compressive force on the top chord of the truss was
found acting on member AB with a magnitude of 2300 kN. Assuming no bolt holes with fy=
300 MPa, Kf=1.00 (for pin connected members of a Steel Truss), determine a size of universal
column that will be structurally adequate to support the maximum axial compressive force in
the top chord of the truss.

The purlins are assumed to be located at the nodes of the truss.

a) Also, check the nominal section capacity of the designed section, and

b) Design the web with regards to shear strength. Use Plasticity Slenderness
Parameter Limit λsp =9.0.
