Self-Check
A. Define the following and provide some examples where each term is evident.
1. Momentum
- Momentum is a quantity defined as the product of the mass and velocity of an object.
- For example, a soccer ball that has a large mass moving very slow with low velocity can have the
same momentum as a tennis ball that has a small mass that is thrown with a high velocity.
2. Impulse
- Impulse is the change in momentum.
- For example, having great racquet head speed increases the force on a Lawn tennis ball, this
decreases the impact time between the racquet and ball.
3. Elastic Collision
- In elastic collision both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved quantities.
- For example, a collision between two balls.
4. Inelastic Collision
- Inelastic collision is one in which part of the kinetic energy is changed to some other form of
energy in the collision.
- For example, dropped ball of clay.
B. Write whether each statement is True or False. Then justify your answer in two or three sentences.
1. The total momentum of an isolated system is less after collision.
- False, because the total momentum of the two objects before the collision is equal to the total
momentum of the two objects after the collision.
2. When one is applying force at a particular time, he or she is imparting impulse.
- True, because impulse is the change of momentum of an object when the object is acted upon by
a force for an interval of time.
3. Impulse is equal to the momentum of an object.
- True, An impulse is equal to the net force on the object times the time period over which this
force is applied. The equation of impulse is F=ma, ma is the change of momentum.
4. The unit N.s and kg m/s are the same.
- True, the newton second (also newton-second, symbol N s or N·s) is the derived SI unit of
impulse. It is dimensionally equivalent to the momentum unit kilogram metre per second
(kg·m/s).
5. In elastic collision, the total momentum of an isolated system is conserved.
- False, an elastic collision is a collision where total momentum and total kinetic energy are both
conserved. This means that in an elastic collision the total momentum and the total kinetic
energy before the collision is the same as after the collision.
