Abstract - Checking of attendance is a Failure Due to Absences (FDA) . It is

time consuming activity for every class.
Attendance issues is one of the most
challenging problems that every professor
face in their class. Some causes of
attendance issues are complex and often
required additional resourcers to work. It
is hard to check attendance if some
students came late and it is quite
disturbing if they enter in their classroom
while the class is already started.
However it is required to every
institutions. Therefore the researchers
wanted to know if having automated
checking of attendance can solve that
problem. The attendance system can
monitor and display the students that are
presents, absents and the students who
came late.
I. INTRODUCTION
Attendance is important for every
students. It is the one of the fundamental
source of grade in class standing. Having a
multiple absences of the students may
results of failing grades with mark of
strictly implemented in every institutions
specially in college degree. Dalubhasaan ng
Lungsod ng Lucena is one of the institution
using traditional way of checking
attendance.

According to the official handbook of
Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng Lucena if the
students came one - fifteen (1 - 15) minutes
late it is acceptable while if they enter 16
minutes and above they will marked as late.
Having 3 consecutive late will be considered
as one absent. The students whol leaves the
class and returns after end of the class will
also mark as absent. A student who
accumulated 3 absences in tuesday and
thursday class or 5 absences in Monday,
Wednesday and Friday must present a letter
from their parents. If the students continues
being absent it will become a reason of his
failing.
Some institutions are using automatic
checking of attendance which can monitor
students who entered the classroom. It can
also identify who are the students came late.
They will tap only their id to the barcode
scanner to record their attendance. It is also
programmed to display the names of the
student who are presents, absents and late.
The researchers wanted to know if having
automatic attendance can solve the
attendance issues or else it may result of
having poor performance checking of
attendance. The researchers also wanted to
know the advantages and the disadvantages
of using that system.
II. RELATED LITERATURE

Automatic attendance checking
have many made improvements in changing
the world. It is a real world solution which
comes day to day checking of attendance.

Using attendance system can
automatically detect the student’s
performance and also it can maintain the
student’s record like attendance.

We know that there are lot of
modes of attendance system being used in
various situation such as schools and higher
institution of learning. The most notable
changes in most educational landscape today
are the capitalization of technology in
managing the attendance of the student.
Different methods and principles
have been applied to effective monitor the
attendance of the students. A system
providing an improvised electronic card and
card reader serially interfaced to the digital
computer system was proposed, which an
embedded computer based attendance
management system (Shoewu , O. O. M.
Olaniyi, and Lawson et al, 2011).
Attendance monitoring system are
also developed using biometric system as a
mode of authentication and marking the
attendance of the students. Authors in
(Shoewu , O. and O.A Idowu et al, 2012)
designed and implemented a system that
uses finger print to mark attendance and
generate the reports at the end of the
semester.

In education sector, the student
attendance system is able to applied by Near
Field Communication (NFC) technology.
Traditionally the manual attendance would
require the professor or the secretaries of
class to provide a sheet of paper and pass
around to sign beside their names and other
methods require the professors to call every
students name one by one. [5]By the use of
automatic attendance system we can provide
a reliable and functional attendance tracking
and reporting system which enables
administrator to identify and rectify those
students who do not meet the minimum
attendance as stipulated in the policy and
academic regulations of the school.
Another study which confirmed the
presence of a student attending a class was
developed using mobile phone via Bluetooth
connection. It will further query the
existence of the student through the transfer
of student’s Media Access Control (MAC)
address to the instructor mobile
phone(Jamil,2011).

The traditional paper based system
takes a lot of time for data entry. It is also
vulnerable to the human error. But the major
disadvantages of the paper-based system
could be resolve by the automated
attendance system. [8] The main advantage of
attendance system is that it is reduced the
complexity comparison to the student
attendance system using RFID Technology.
