The admission procedure code and admission requirements for the Nanotechnology doctoral degree programme at

VSB - Technical University of Ostrava for the academic year 2020/2021


The Vice-Rector for study affairs of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava announces – according to the Act on Higher Education Institutions,
sections 48–50 – the 1st round of admission procedure in the academic year 2020/2021for the full-time and combined study of the doctoral degree
programme:

Nanotechnology

The VSB – Technical University of Ostrava offers this doctoral study in either Czech or English language.
At the VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, the doctoral degree programmes inthe Czech language are tuition-free.
For the doctoral degree programmes in the English language, the tuition fee is € 3500 per academic year.

To submit the application for the doctoral degree programme, the applicant is – until May 29th, 2020 – obliged to:
- Submit an electronic application form. Printing and sending physical applicationis not required.
- Choose the general topic of the doctoral thesis in the chosen programme. The topic is an obligatory part of the application form. We
advise consulting the topic with its respective supervisor.
- Submit the interim achievements of the previous Master’s study and the arithmetic mean (rounded to two decimal places) of the
results from the first to the penultimate semester. Students of the Nanotechnology Centre VSB-TUO completing their study in 2020 are
not required to submit the interim achievements. If the applicant already completed their study, they are to submit both the Master’s degree
diploma and the Diploma supplement with the application.
- Pay the administrative fee of500,-CZK. The fee is non-recoverable. We advise paying the fee immediately after the submission of the
application – application without the paid fee cannot be processed further.
The applications failing to meet these requirements will be excluded from the admission procedure.

The applicant whose application meets the requirements is – until June 30th, 2020 – obliged to supplement the electronic application form
with:

- Master’s degree diploma


- Diploma supplement
- Curriculum vitae
- List of published and unpublished work (when applicable)
- Other relevant documents (such as proof of professional experience, language proficiency certificates etc.)
- Proof of validation of foreign studies in the Czech Republic (nostrification, https://www.vsb.cz/cs/o-univerzite/sluzby/uznavani-
zahranicniho-vzdelani/), when applicable (does not apply for the cases of equivalent documents such as from Slovak Republic).
- Language certificate. The applicant is obliged to prove their ability to study in the chosen language. In the case of the Czech language,
completion of previous studies (Master’s degree) in Czech or Slovak language is sufficient. Otherwise, the applicant is obliged to submit a
certificate proving knowledge of the Czech language at B1 level (http://www.vsb.cz/712/cs/cestina-pro-cizince/). In the case of the English
language, completion of the previous studies in the English language is sufficient, otherwise, a certificate proving knowledge of the
English language at B1 level (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS) has to be submitted.
All the required documents should be scanned or photographed in a legible way and contain all the pages.

Other admission requirements (sect. 49, par. 1)


In the case of the applicants who submitted the application form with all the required documents, the decision on their admission will be
based on the arithmetic mean (AM) of their interim achievements of the previous Master’s study. The applicants with AM less than or equal to
2.25 will be admitted. In the case of the applicants with AM greater than 2.25, their admission will be based on the evaluation of the submitted
documents (CV, list of published and unpublished works) and they may be invited for a personal interview during which their knowledge on the
chosen field of study will be evaluated. When more applicants apply for the same general topic of the doctoral thesis, more applicants may be
admitted for the same topic (according to the means of the supervisor) or the applicants with lower AM will be preferred and other available topics
will be offered to the rest of the applicants (with higher AM).
The admission procedure (personal interview) will take place on June 15th, 2020, the invitations will be delivered to the applicants one week before
the interview. Absence at this interview must be formally justified to the Study Department of the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology
(FMST) not later than 3 days before the interview. Alternative date of the interview will be announced to the applicant in 7 days.
The Vice-Rector for study affairs can announce the 2nd round of the admission procedure. The deadline for the application will be from July 13th to
August 31st, 2020; the deadline for the submitting of the relevant documents on September 7th, 2020.

The Vice-Rector for study affairs decides on the admission to study in university study programmes. The decision on the admissions for the
doctoral degree study must be issued in 30 days from the assessment of the fulfilment of the requirements according to the Act on Higher Education
Institutions, section 49 (section 50, paragraph 4) but no later than on August 31st, 2020. The decision must include its justification and information
on the possibility of filing an appeal against the decision according to the section 50, paragraph 6 of the Act and must be delivered personally or – in
case of a favourable decision and with the consent of the applicant – via the information system.
The highest number of students in the doctoral degree programme Nanotechnology in the academic year 2020/2021 is 12.
During the 15 days after the admission procedure, the university will publish a report (sect. 50, par. 9)
The applicant may file an appeal against the decision within 30 days of its publication (sect. 50, par. 6)
The applicant has the right to access the file after the publication of the decision (sect. 50, par. 5) within 30 days of its publication.

Appendix for Academic Senate – 2nd round of admission procedure:

The second round of admission procedure is expected to take place from July 13th to August 31st, 2020 with the deadline for the submitting of the
relevant documents on September 7th, 2020.

VSB – Technical University of Ostrava is waiting for the accreditation of the programme of study “Nanotechnology - PhD study in the frame of
Double International Guidance.” After its accreditation, this programme is going to be added to the admission procedure if it meets the
requirement of publication at least for one month.
