ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS
1. Air at 200 ˚ C static temperature moves at 125 m / sec velocity. Find stagnation temperature?
2. Define the principle of Pulse jet engine.
3. Sketch the Fanno curve on h – s diagram.
4. What is the difference between Fanno and Rayleigh flow?
5. Why does a normal shock occur?
6. Define strength of the Shock.
7. Distinguish between jet and rocket propulsion.
8. What is thrust augmentation?
9. What is monopropellant? Give one example for it.
10. Name the types of fuels used in rocket propulsion.

PART – C ( 5 12 = 60 Marks )

11. (a) A stream of air at a given temperature passes from a duct of uniform cross sectional area
of 0.001 m2 through a converging diverging diffuser having same exit area correctly designed
so as to increase the air pressure. The air enters the diffuser at 105 kPa pressure and 75 ˚ C
temperature with a velocity of 600 m / sec. Assuming isentropic diffusion, determine the area at
throat and pressure of air at exit. (12 Marks)

(b) An aircraft is flying at an altitude of 12,000 meters (T = 216.65 K, P = 0.193 bar) at a Mach
number of 0.82. The cross sectional area of the inlet diffuser before the Low Pressure compressor
stage is 0.5 m2. Determine: a) the mass of air entering the compressor per second b) the speed of the
aircraft and c) the stagnation pressure and temperature of air at the diffuser entry. (12 Marks)

12. (a) A supersonic nozzle expands air from p o = 25 bar and To = 1050 K to an exit pressure of
4.35 bar ; the exit area of the nozzle is 100 cm 2. Determine a) throat area b) pressure and
temperature at the throat c) temperature at exit d) exit velocity as fraction of the maximum
attainable velocity and e) mass flow rate . (12 Marks)

(b) Dry air is traveling at supersonic speed with a mach number 2.5 through a constant
diameter pipe of 5 cm with friction coefficient f = 0.003 . Find the maximum possible length and
length of the pipe and properties at a section where the pressure is twice the inlet pressure. The
inlet stagnation properties are PO = 500 k Pa and TO = 600 K . (12 Marks)

13. (a) i. A convergent-divergent nozzle has an exit area to throat area of A 2 / A1 = 2.5.The total
head properties at inlet are PO = 7 bar , TO = 87 ˚C . The throat area A t = 6.5 cm2. Determine at exit,
Mach number, static pressure and temperature , stagnation pressure when a normal shock stands at
a point where M x = 2 . (8 Marks)

ii. Explain the phenomenon of normal shock. (4 Marks)

(b) A convergent –divergent nozzle is designed to expand air from a reservoir in which
the pressure is 800 k Pa and temperature is 40˚ C to give a mach number at exit of 2.5. The throat
area is 25 cm2 . Find i ) mass flow rate, ii ) exit area and iii ) when a normal shock appears at a
section where the area is 40 cm2 . Determine the pressure and temperature at exit. (12 Marks)

14. (a) The speed of a jet propulsion unit is 720 Km / hr. The total head pressure and
temperature at inlet to compressor are 70 K Pa and 273 K . The total pressure and temperature of
gases entering the turbine are 3.15 bar and 760 ˚ C . The isentropic efficiencies of turbine and
compressors are 85 % and 80 % respectively . The staticpressure on the propulsion nozzle is 53
K Pa . The efficiency of the nozzle is 90 % .Neglect other losses and m f for thrust and other.
Determine a) Power required per kg air per sec b) Air- fuel ratio if fuel has a C V of 42000 kJ / kg
c) the total pressure of gases leaving the turbine and d ) thrust per kg sec . For air γ = 1.4 , R =
0.287 kJ / kg K. For gases γ = 1.33 , CP = 1.132 kJ / kg . (12 Marks)

(b) i. With neat sketch, describe the working of Ram Jet Engine. (6 Marks)

ii. Explain the working of a liquid propellant rocket engine with neat sketch. (6 Marks)

15. (a) i. A rocket has the following data : Propellant flow rate is 5 kg / sec , nozzle exit diameter
is 10 cm ; nozzle exit pressure = 1.02 bar ; ambient pressure = 1.013 bar ; thrust chamber
pressure = 20 bar ; thrust is 7 k N . Determine the effective jet velocity, actual jet velocity, specific
impulse and the specific propellant consumption. (9 Marks)

ii. What is rocket propulsion? Why is a rocket called as non – breathing engine? (3 Marks)

(b) i. Explain the construction and operation of a solid propellant rocket engine with neat sketch
and also name any four solid propellants. (8 Marks)

ii. List out the advantages of liquid propellant engines over the solid propellant rocket engines.
