Review of Related Literature

This chapter includes a discussion of the literature pertaining to The Effects of Facebook
Addiction to the Academic Performance of Grade 10 students in San Roque National High
School(SRNHS) Batch 2019-2020. This will also present the definition of terms for better
comprehensive of the study.

Related Literature

Definition of Facebook Addiction to the academic performance

According to Khan (2019) It is important to recognize the excessive usage of Facebook


as addiction and steps should be taken to minimize or regulate its use among students so their
studies are not affected.

Social networks have had a major influence on students’ performance in recent years.
These networks create many opportunities and threats for students in various fields. Addiction to
social networking and its impact on students’ academic performance. Azizi (2019)

Bonnette (2019) Given the prevalence of social media use, it is vital to understand the
impact it plays on mental health. The purpose of this study was to shed light and better
understand how frequent social media usage can affect mental health. Particularly, this study
focused on the frequent usage of social media and its relevance to depression.

Facebook addiction means spending an excessive amount of time on Facebook.


Typically, it involves a person's Facebook use interfering with important activities in life, such as
work, school. Walker (2019) There is an elevated probability for those users to become
Facebook addicts or ‘Facebook junkies’. Therefore there is a growing concern about such users
obtaining lower grades due to excessive Facebook use and will never improve if they wish to
proceed with actions that will not bring any benefits to them in the first place. Muniandy (2018)

Vashishtha (2018) Facebook could be a great tool to connect with friends and maintain
relationships, there is a line that could be crossed in which adolescents utilize Facebook too
much where they cross the limit from simply using the site to devoting all of their time and
energy to checking their news feeds.

According to Wesonga and Candia (2017) student was considered a heavy Internet user
when he or she was using the Internet for more than three hours daily. Internet usage was
deemed to encompass the general Internet use and the use of all software applications that derive
from the Internet, for example the use of social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram,
WhatsApp, Twitter and Skype; whether for positive or negative use.

Alqahtani (2017) said that the social media caused the decrease in the academic
performance of students and hours of social sites usage and usage during lecture affected the
academic performance of students significantly. Also social media has both positive and negative
effect on the social life of students.

Helou and Rahim (2016) tried to study the students’ perceptions on the use of social
networking sites and its influence on their academic performance. They found most of the
respondents do feel that the SNSs have more positive impact on their academic performance due
to its use for various academic activities such as communicating with the faculty and university
authority, communicating with lecturers and supervisors, making academic discussions with
classmates and chatting with friends in respect to topics o f educational interest.

Students that is addicted to internet and computer and why they tend more to spend time
with the primitive forms of computer. Students who have free access to technology and other
technological tools have higher levels of Facebook addictions. Within this frame, if students
have smart phones and internet, or if there is computer in their bedrooms, Facebook addiction

Reasons why Students use Facebook application Some students use of Facebook
application because this is one of their ways to have fun and one of the reasons why they use
Facebook because they are able to bond with their friends and family through using Facebook
app. Khan(2019)
Some students using Facebook application just to be there stress reliver when they are
being over fatigue due to the school paper works. But apparently they are become addictive and
because of that they apparently have a lower grades in their subjects. Biolcati and Mancini
(2018)
According to Khan (2018) Students who invest more time on Facebook spend less time
finishing scholarly work as indicated in our study. Facebook is not widely used for learning
purposes and it is important to characterized this addiction to serious disorder and counselling or
other ways should be devised to minimize Facebook use.

Effects of using Facebook on their Study Habits Students who often using facebook
app leads in some problems like being distracted to their class and for those students who didn’t
do their homework can lead to a low grades, poor performance and can affect their social
behavior.
Helou and Rahim (2016) .For those students who didn’t know to manage and to limit
their time that who are attached to themselves seating for a long time using Facebook app. Are
mostly often no assignments will be presented to their teachers.

How to Lessen your Time using FacebookAccording Nida Tabassum Khan (2018).To
keep the amount of time spent using Facebook under control, try these for adults and kids alike,
Set time limits for use and stick to them. Keep phones and other gadgets out of the bedroom so
you won’t play or use into the night. 

On the report of Sohail Ahmed (2016). To reduce your time on using Facebook
application is to find a harder task like doing your home works.A challenging piece of homework
can be just as good as challenging.Parents should talk to their child and give some advanced
topics when he completed their homework.
