In my opinion, English grammar is the most difficult to teach students. There are

many reasons why I think it that way. The most important one is that students often get

bored during the grammar lesson. They have to practice time after time by doing exercises.

Although they don’t fully understand the questions, they still manage to do all of them quite

well. That is not the real purpose of learning a language. The main aim is using the target

language as a communication tool. If I continue teaching grammar that way, I will ruin my

students’ interest. I am taking a course in order to apply new techniques to teach grammar.

During this month, I have to demonstrate two lessons about grammar. I finished one of

them. There are some strengths and some weaknesses I really want to discuss more about.

At the beginning of the lesson, I asked my students to stand in a circle and found

their partners based on the information in the given small piece of paper. Students were

happy to find their partner and became the winner. In my opinion, I did a quite good job in

this part. My warm-up part is fun, short and related to the topic of the lesson. Moreover, I

gave my students two activities that are designed in open-ended form. Therefore, all of my

students had a chance to practice the grammar point. Not only good students but also fair

students felt comfortable to do the task without hesitation. Good students had a chance to

shine and show their talents. Fair students can also give their own answer and be creative

with the task. Moreover, I arranged the activities based on the level of difficulty. Students

got acquaintance with the grammar point from the single words, phrases, sentences and to

story. I think that it was easy and fun for students to understand the grammar point in that

way.
If I had a chance to do my lesson again, I would change a little bit to make it more

interesting to my students. I would change the post-task activity into a role play. After

making up the story, students will do role-play in pairs. Therefore, student will have the

chance to practice the grammar point in real life communication. They act it and actually

feel it. Maybe that is the better way to practice the language. Moreover, there is one thing I

need to improve. That is the pitch of my speaking. I sometimes speak quite fast, hence

students may find it difficult to follow all of my instruction. In the future, I will practice

speaking more slowly and clearer. In my opinion, the speed of speaking plays an important

role in a good lesson. If students can not follow teacher’ direction, they will not fully

understand the lesson.
