Learning Objective 2.3 The student will investigate and understand basic properties
of solids, liquids, and gases. Key concepts include

a) identification of distinguishing characteristics of solids,

liquids, and gases;
b) measurement of the mass and volume of solids and liquids;
and
c) changes in phases of matter with the addition or removal of
energy.
Pedagogy

Activity In order for my students to be able to understand the activity I

will have them complete; I will be going over Matter for three
days out of the week so they can fully understand the material.
Each day will be for a different state of matter (solid, liquid, and
gas). I will explain to them and show them videos to better
understand each phase and their characteristics. In class I will
have experiments for each state, on the last day to make sure the
students fully understand how each state can change from one
phase to another, from adding or removing energy. This
experiment will include me bringing ice to the classroom starting
as a solid then melting to a liquid, I will also show them a video
of ice being melted in a hot pan to show the evaporation being
the gas. Last, I will be sure to have the students identify what and
how we can measure each of these sates of matter. The activity I
will have my students do involving technology will be to create a
mini storyboard/PowerPoint. In their activity they can make it a
story as if they are teaching someone about the three states of
matter or simply explain with using pictures that are clear. I will
be expecting in each student’s presentation:
A) A picture of a solid, liquid, and gas
B) What each state is measured with
C) A transformation from one phase to another, for all three
states of matter
There will be plenty of time for the students to finish this activity
in class and will turn it in by the end of class.
