ess at the workshop; participants are
expected to be present for all large and
small group sessions.

Each registrant will be assigned to a

small experiential group facilitated by
one of the faculty members. The pur-
pose of these groups is to help mem-
bers increase their knowledge of group
dynamics and process, individual dynam-
ics and interpersonal communication
through the study of one's own behav-
ior and that of the group and the
leader.

Phillip J. Flores is a clinical psy-
chologist who has worked exten-
sively for the past 25 years in the
area of addictive disorders and
group psychotherapy. He is a
Fellow of the American Group
Psychotherapy Association and
holds a Certificate of Proficiency in the Treat-
ment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Sub-
stance Use Disorders issued by the American
Psychological Association. Dr. Flores is adjunct
faculty at Georgia State University and the
Georgia School of Professional Psychology and
is supervisor of group psychotherapy at Emory
University. Dr. Flores has published numerous
articles, chapters and books on addiction and
group psychotherapy.
As a result of the workshop,
participants will gain knowledge of:
Ways that attachment theory apply to
group therapy with addicted patients.
Early treatment strategies and group ther-
apy with addicted patients.
Later stage treatment strategies as they
apply to treating substance abusers in
group.
Different styles of attachment (Avoidant,
Insecure, Ambivalent, & Secure) and their
relationship to addiction treatment in
group.
Different leadership styles as they apply to
addiction treatment in group.
Conference Description
The purpose of this workshop, open to clini-
cians and students of all levels of training and
experience, is to familiarize participants with
the field of addiction treatment and group psy-
chotherapy. Emphasis will be placed on intro-
ducing the most current theories of addiction
and group treatment approaches that have the
most practical application for its diagnosis and
treatment.
Particular emphasis will be placed on
integrating the 12-step abstinence model with
attachment theory, self psychology, and other
psychodynamic theories of addiction and the
ways these approaches are applied within a
group therapy format by the leading practitio-
ners of group psychotherapy. A unified elucida-
tion of these theories will be presented to help
explain the underlying dynamics that exist with
all addictions (e.g., alcoholism, drugs, sex, gam-
bling, food, work, etc.) and the relation of these
addictions to character pathology.

ter is a smoke free, drug-free, weapon-free and
alcohol-free retreat center. Burning of incense
or candles is prohibited in any building except
for use in corporate worship. No pets except
service animals are allowed in hotel or cabin
style lodging. Pets are allowed in the camping
area and must be restrained at all times.”
