- Andres Bonifacio

Considered as the Great Plebian, he led the armed revolt against the Spaniards. His ideology includes
being socially responsive and patriotism. He fought oppression and injustices by means of a revolution.
In a revolution, one aims to implement changes quickly. He believed in the strength of the citizens. He
established a union called KKK, which aims for separatism, equality of man and mobilization of moral
virtues.

Andres Bonifacio was born on Nov. 30, 1863 in Tondo, Manila to Santiago Bonifacio and Catalina de
Castro. During the 1870s, when his parents died, he left school and supported his younger siblings.
Luckily, before his parents’ death, he was able to study Tagalog and Spanish. Similarly, as he grows old,
he becomes exposed to different books containing the ideals of liberalism and nationalism, such as the
novels which Jose Rizal published: the Noli Me Tangere  and El Filibusterismo. Later, he would be
joining La Liga Filipina.  He would also establish a secessionist movement: The Katipunan,  which will
pave way for Asia’s first uprising against an imperial power and a forerunner of Asia’s first republic.
Sadly, he would have to die in the hands of fellow revolutionaries after being charged with treason. He
died on May 10, 1897

Bonifacio was born of poor parents in Manila and had little formal education, working as a messenger
and warehouse keeper before becoming involved in revolutionary activity. He was, however, well-read.
Unlike the nationalist poet and novelist José Rizal, who wanted to reform Spanish rule in the Philippines,
Bonifacio advocated complete independence from Spain. In 1892 he founded the Katipunan in Manila,
modelling its organization and ceremony on that of the Masonic order. The Katipunan at first grew
slowly, but by 1896 it had an estimated 100,000 members and branches not only in Manila but also in
central Luzon and on the islands of Panay, Mindoro, and Mindanao. Its members were mostly workers
and peasants; the urban middle class supported reform rather than revolution
