CIVIL FUNDAMENTALS FOR RTT SITES
1. Chipping, Marking and Rod Anchoring.

A) If the Reinforcement rods (> 400mm length) are already

exposed above the Floor level, then the weather Proof Flooring
provided on the Roof need to be chipped and proper lapping of
Reinforcement rods has to be provided as per drawing.

B) If incase the Reinforcement rods are Flushed inside the Roof,

then chipping for columns has to be done for exposing the
reinforcement in the column location till our columns
reinforcement are identified and then Holes of 20mm dia has to
be drilled very next to the Visible column rod till a depth of Min
300mm from the chipped portion.
C) The Dust particles inside the Holes has to be expelled using a Blower
and then 50% of the Hole has to be filled with the Locksit/HILTI
compound and 16mm Rods have to be inserted inside the hole and
allow to Compound to Harden for Minimum of 12 Hours before
concreting.
D) The beam locations on the terrace need to be marked using chalk
piece/temporary markers before providing the bottom shuttering.

Note: If the size of the Reinforcement rods Existing in the building is found to
be less than/equal to 6 rods of 12mm and with Column size less than/equal
to 230X300, Then immediately report to the in charge Civil Manager.

2. Reinforcement and Template Leveling:

A) Check reinforcement according to the design drawing and BOQ.

B) Make sure that the Foundation bolts are placed properly to the proper
Tube level and 150mm above the concrete level.
Check that all the Foundation Bolts are level using a water tube level. (Figure 1)

Figure 1: Checking level of all Foundation Bolts

Photo: Showing the All the Foundation bolts are equal.
C) Check for the laps (should be min 50 Times the Dia of Rods). Only
alternate laps to be provided and Lapping of rods is not permitted in
Beam Bottom Rods.

D) Make sure that there is no lap provided in Column Rods.

E) Check for the Spacer bar provision between the

Reinforcement bars (B/w 1st and 2nd Layers).
F) The reinforcement rods used should not be rusted/ no oil or grease is
smeared on it.

G) The foundation bolts are to be checked for tightness properly to the tube
level.

H) In Case of Ramboll towers make to set the casting part in such a way that
the Top hole in the casting part is only half filled with Concrete.

I) Check template level (Both Tube level and Spirit Level)and Tightening
before concreting.

3. SHUTTERING AND COVER BLOCKS:

A) Bottom Shuttering for beams should be provided at minimum 300mm gap

from the terrace/ Floor level of the building and also it has to be Tube Level.

B) Shuttering/Foam work gives shape to the concrete.

C) Foam work should be SIMPLE to Build, EASY to Handle and RE-

USABLE.
D) Only Plywood/Steel Shuttering should be provided for making the Formwork
for Columns and Beams (Wooden planks are not allowed for making Formwork).

E) Foam oil to be applied to the inside of the foam work to stop it from sticking to
the concrete and make removal easier.

F)The Joints in the shuttering should be covered using the packing tape, to ensure
no cement mortar/Slurry is leaked through the gap (Refer below photo).
G) The shuttering provided must be Rigid and proper supports
should be provided to ensure the stiffness to Concrete.

H) The Shuttering should be aligned in line and level of shuttering

should be rigid and should not to get disturbed during the usage of
Vibrator for compacting concrete.
I) Plastic cover blocks should be provided for Beam/slab Bottom and sides
for maintaining the Proper Clearance between the Shuttering and
Reinforcement

Photo-2: showing the cover block provision for DG Slab
J) Side Shuttering for Beams has to be removed only after 1 day
of complete setting period.
And Bottom shuttering has to be removed only after 7
days of curing. In case of Raised Structure bottom shuttering has
to be removed only after 10 Days of Curing.

4. CONCRETE:

A) Concrete is made by Mixing

Cement,
Fine Aggregate (Sand),
Coarse Aggregate (jelly),
Water and
Admixtures if Required.
B) The above materials are mixed in measured amounts in proportions of
M20 (1:1.5:3)
Signifies 1 portion of Cement, 1.5 portion of Fine Aggregate (Sand) and
3 Portions of Coarse Aggregate (Jelly/Blue metal).
C) The Water Proportion in concrete is measured in terms of
Water/ Cement Ratio.
i.e., The Water to Cement Ratio (W/C) is the weight of Water
divided by the weight of cement.
W/C=Water/Cement i.e., 25Litres/50 Kgs =0.5

Note: 1) 1 litre of water weighs 1 Kilogram.

2) Use 10% extra cement in case of hand mixing
The Lower the W/C ratio, Greater is the strength of Concrete and Vice versa.

D) The process of preparing concrete is obtained by Mixing measured

proportions of cement and sand as per ratio of 1: 1.5 and then 3 proportions
of Coarse aggregate (jelly) is added to the mixture of cement & sand and
then the mortar is thoroughly mixed with minimum amount of water to
make like a paste for easy workability.

E) The concrete mix should immediately placed to the concreting portion

and proper compaction of mix has to be done using Vibrator.
F) Always insert the Vibrator Quickly into the Concrete and Remove Very
Slowly. The Vibrator must be inserted vertically inside the concrete and
vibrator should not be used to move the concrete. The vibrator should be used
frequently for better compaction and to obtain good surface Finish.

G) The concrete cubes of sizes 150mm X 150mm X 150mm of 6 no’s to be

prepared in site for testing for 7 and 28 days with naming on it. These cubes
need to be testing in laboratory after 7 days (3 Cubes) and 28 days (3 cubes) of
curing.

5. CURING:

A) Curing means keeping the concrete surface MOIST.

By keeping the concrete moist the bond between the paste and Aggregate
becomes stronger. There will be a Heat of hydration of mixture, which needs
to be expelled/cooled to make the bonding strong.

B) The concrete gains strength only with proper curing. Concrete that is
cured is less likely to CRACK and will be more DURABLE. The Cured
concrete surfaces losts longer and better protects the Steel Reinforcement.
C) Concrete can be cured by
Spreading the Wetted Gunny Bags all around the concrete (OR) by
keeping the concrete Surface wet by watering continuously/Making temporary
pond on the dg slab and beams and making the water stagnation on the surface.
D) Curing has to be done continuously for Minimum of 7 days
from the date of concreting.
For Better strength and Durability cure concrete for 14 days.

6. PLASTERING & WHITEWASHING:

A) Plastering and whitewashing need to be done to ensure inline and

proper finishing to the concrete surface with desired thickness.

7. ADDITIONAL CHECK TO BE MADE:

A) Waterproof coping near the columns need to be done

without fail to avoid leakage problems.
B) Insist the vendor to clear the terrace portion immediately after concreting,
so that the stains left out of concrete mix is completely washed away leaving
the terrace in good condition.

C) The gap between the Tower stub and the upper surface of the beams need
to be filled with Concrete to ensure proper coping below foundation bolts.
(Only for Delta and Angular Towers).
D) If the shelter is placed on the beams, then the pedestal need to be constructed by
civil vendor of required height as per site condition over which the Shelter access
steps will be placed for easy access inside the shelter.
Extra Pedestals to be
constructed below the
shelter staircase for easy
access inside the shelter.
E) Brick Steps is required to be constructed for accessing to the DG bed and the
Tower if required.

F) If it is a Raised column structure, if Access ladder is required. Kindly bring it to

the notice of the Project in charge immediately during civil wip.

G) Check for availability of Cement bags quantity required according to number of

Cum of Concrete (Approx. 8 Bags/cum of 1:1.5:3 concrete).

H) Insist the vendor to cover the cement bags with plastic sheet to avoid it from
getting spoiled during storage.

I) Make sure that all buckets/Bandalies to be used for measuring Cement, fine and
coarse aggregate are of uniform size.

J) Ensure there are at least two mechanical vibrators (in working condition) are
available at site before concreting.

K) Ensure that there is enough water for the concrete mixture and for curing the
foundation for the next 48 hours.

L) Ensure that sufficient projectors, electric cables and power are available for
working during the night.
M) As for as possible avoid concreting during night times.
