The most crucial and important factor to decide the outcome in conventional warfare is the

air supremacy. While operations by land, sea and air are extremely difficult or even

impossible for the side who doesn’t control the skies. In words of Field Marshal Bernard

Montgomery, “If we lose the war in the air, we lose the war and we lose it quickly.” During

the second world war, the race for air supremacy between the great powers involved in the

conflict generated a massive advance on new technologies in aviation, giving us some of

the most iconic planes ever flown. This fast breakthrough on engineering started the

foundations for the modern era planes that we see today in our everyday lives.

Going from experimental planes to fully mass-produced aircraft and even leading to an

even better kind of next generation planes, while some differences between mass produced

and post world war two era planes are noticeable, the similarities are pronounced.

Modern aviation would be nothing without iconic aircraft like the German Messerschmitt

Bf-109 and the American P51 Mustang. These two planes set the standards in the world of

aviation and the first steps leading into a next generation of military and civilian aircraft.

The second world war was the turning point in the aeronautics industry, this due to the

innovation lead by aeronautical engineers. (Clarke, 2008).

“In the wake of WWII, the future of aviation looked extremely bright, anything seemed

possible” (Clarke, 2008). By the decades of the 50’s and 60’s, planes drastically changed its

technologies, starting with the first reaction engine plane made by the Germans, the

Messerschmitt Me-262, and on the oncoming years the production of the American F86
Sabre. This kind of brand-new technology reached even into the civilian aircraft industry,

giving us the bases to the magnificent jet airliners that we have today.

Even though these new technologies seemed like magic, in those years everything still was

experimental and more discoveries were to be made, but still, it was a great time for

aeronautics.

The importance between WWII planes to the post-war era aircraft is very significant. The

breakthroughs done in those years like supersonic flight and emergency systems set the

course on better aircraft. In conclusion, without this golden era in aviation, we couldn't

have the great comfort on the planes of today.
