5 PROCEDURE
5.1 MATERIAL REQUIRED
5.1.1 Oil sample
5.1.2 Conical Flask
5.1.3 100 ml Beaker
5.1.4 Weigh Balance
5.1.5 Dropper
5.1.6 Reflux Condenser
5.1.7 Boiling Water Bath
5.1.8 Glass Pipette
5.1.9 Burette

5.2 REAGENTS REQUIRED

5.2.1 Ethanolic KOH(95% ethanol, v/v)
5.2.2 Potassium hydroxide [0.5N]
5.2.3 Fat solvent ( ethanol / ether Mixture)
5.2.4 Hydrochloric acid[0.5N]
5.2.5 Phenolphthalein indicator

5.3 PROCEDURE

5.3.1 Weigh 1g of fat in a tared beaker and dissolve in about 3ml of the fat solvent [ethanol /ether mixture].\
5.3.2 Quantitatively transfer the contents of the beaker three times with a further 7ml of the solvent.
5.3.3 Add 25ml of 0.5N alcoholic KOH and mix well, attach this to a reflux condenser.
5.3.4 Set up another reflux condenser as the blank with all other reagents present except the fat.
5.3.5 Place both the flasks in a boiling water bath for 30 minutes.
5.3.6 Cool the flasks to room temperature.
5.3.7 Now add phenolphthalein indicator to both the flasks and titrate with 0.5N HCl.
5.3.8 Note down the endpoint of blank and test.
Reading for Test Sample = T ml
Reading for Blank = B ml
5.3.9 The difference between the blank and test reading gives the number of milliliters of 0.5N KOH
required to saponify 1g of fat.
5.3.10 Calculate the saponification value using the formula :

1 ml (0.5 N HCL) = 28.05 mg KOH

Saponification Number (S) = (B-T) X 28.05 / ( wt. of Oil 1 gm) = _________________mg KOH/
