Rationale Standard 9: Reflection and Continuous Growth

Video #1 – Level K Reading Group

Introduction to Standard 9:
• The teacher is a reflective practitioner who uses evidence to continually evaluate
his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others
(students, families, and other professionals in the learning community), and
adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.
o In other words, the teacher is using evidence from student assessments
and progress monitoring to make instruction choices. Teachers also use
this information to fill in gaps in their competence and learn new
strategies for areas in which they are lacking.
• Indicator 9(d)
o “Actively seeks professional, community, and technological resources,
within and outside the school, as supports for analysis, reflection, and
problem-solving.”

Introduction of the Artifact:

• Level K Reading Group
o One of the requirements of student teaching is for the educator to record
themselves teaching and analyze their instruction three times. For Video
Analysis #1, the lesson recorded was with the high level reading group. In
addition to the lesson plan is a reflection from watching the video.

Rationale:
Part of being an effective educator is reflection. By recording videos of
instruction and later watching and reflecting on them, educators can self-assess
their effectiveness and build confidence in their teaching. This directly meets
Standard 9 as the standard asks educators to use “evidence to continually
evaluate his/her practice,” the evidence being the video and reflection on it.
Using video recording is a great way to self-evaluate. While evaluation from
other professionals (whether that be from peers/colleagues, administrators, etc.)
is also effective, self-evaluation is equally as important. Because the classroom
teacher knows their students best, watching and reflecting on their practice, can
be a method to better plan instruction and intervention. Video analysis meets
indicator 9(d) because the educator is using “technological resources
within…the school, as supports for analysis [and] reflection.” This correlates
directly, as watching a video is a great form of reflection and can even be used
for problem solving as the indicator also suggests.
