The students will pass around the suffix ball. After they say an example, they will try and
explain how it changes the word. For example, the ball has all common suffixes like –er. A
Assessment student might land on that one and say teacher, -er means one who so a teacher is one who
teaches.
The students need to know what a root word is before the lesson.

Lesson Plan
Hook/Before (Focus and Review) How you will motivate students’ interests?
Ok so before we start we are going to watch a video about suffixes.
(play the video).
Like she said in the video, A suffix is a word part that is added to
the end of a root word. Adding a suffix to the end of a word
changes the word meaning. Let's review what a root word is. What
is a root word? (ask class) A root word is the main part that gives it
meaning. A suffix can change that meaning.
Although there are a lot of suffixes out there, Today, we will be
focusing on 5 common suffix we see often (Read suffixes) On
board:
Teach(root) -er (suffix)
-er One who/ Comperative
-ful Full of
-ly Characteristics of
-ing Verb form present
-ment Action or process
Now I will split you up into groups and you will create a dance to
the song we played in the beginning for 50sec.
Make sure you use the space, be creative, you can use props, and
make sure everyone participates.
For students that struggle during the suffix ball game I will have the
suffixes and meanings on the board as a reference and I will help
guide them. For the dance, if a group finishes creating their dance
Accommodations
before other groups I will have them pass the suffix ball around
again until other groups are done.
