Impact of stress on mental health among adolescence
INTRODUCTION
Stress:-
Stress is the negative feelings that arise whenever people feel unable to
cope with demands from their environment in psychology, stress is a feeling of
strain and pressure.

According to Hensselye(1979)”Stress refers to nonspecific response of


the body to any demand made upon it.

According to Morgan, king, Weisz &Schoplar(1986) “Stress as an internal


statewhich can be caused by physical demand on the body(diseased conditions,
exercise extremes of temperature and the like)or by environmental and social
situation which are evaluated as potentially harmful uncontrollable or exceeding
our resourses for coping. ”

Types of Stress:-
Hans Selye has devided Stress into two Types:-
1. Positive Stress:-
Positive stress is also known as the eustress, Positive stress helps
improve athletic performance. It also plays a factor in motivation,
adaptation and reaction to the environment.

2.Negative Stress:
negative stress is also called distress In negative stress excessive amounts of
stress, however may lead to bodily harm. Stress can increase the risk of
strokes, heart attacks ulcers depression.
Some of the common symptoms of excessive stress are:-
 Memory Problems
 Inability to concentrate
 Anxious and moodiness
 Depression or general unhappiness
 Diarrhea or Constipation
 Chest pain, rapid heartbeat

Causes of stress:-

Common external causes of stress are:-


 Major life changes
 Work or school
 Relationship difficulties
 Financial problems
 Being too busy
 Death of someone and Health problems

Common internal causes of stress are:-


 Chronic worry
 Pessimism
 Unrealistic expectation
 Rigid thinking and Lack of flexibility

Some of the important causes of stress among adolescence are-


 Peer pressure
 Family problem
 Economical problem
 Serious illness
MENTAL HEALTH:-
Mental Health is a state of emotional and psychological well- being in which an
individual is able to use their cognitive and emotional capabilities, function in
society and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life.

In others words, Mental health is a level of psychological well-being or an


absence of a mental disorder.

According to World Health Organization “Mental health includes


subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence,
intergenerational dependence and self-actualization of one’s intellectual and
emotional potential among others.”

Many factors contribute to mental health problems including:-


 Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry.
 Life experience, such as trauma or abuse.
 Family history of mental health problems.

Positive mental health allows people to:-


 Realize their full potential
 Cope with the stresses of life
 Make meaningful contributions to their communities
 Deal with life’s challenges

ADOLESCENCE:-

 Adolescence is a transitional stage of physical and psychological


human development that generally occurs during the period from
puberty to legal adulthood.
 According to G. Stanley Hall’s “this period to begin at puberty at
about 12 or 13 years, and end late, between 22 years to 25 years of
age.”
METHODOLOGY
Methodology of this research work will consists of following
section.
Purpose of the study:-
The purpose of the study is to see the impact of
stress on mental health among adolescents. Thus answer to the following
questions will be sought-

 Do adolescent boys and girls differ in their stress?


 Do adolescent boys and girls differ in their mental health?
 Is there any relation between stress and mental health?

Hypothesis:-
With this purpose following hypothesis were formulated –

1. Stress will be high in adolescent girls than boys.

2. Mental health will be better among adolescent boys than girls

3. There will be negative correlation between stress and mental


health

Sample:-
The present study will conducted on 400 adolescence out of which
400 adolescence were with problem of stress. Sample also include male
(N=200) and female (N=200) adolescence. Incidental-cum-purposive
sampling techniques will be used. Sample will be taken from different
organization in Bihar.
Tools:-
The tools to be used for data collection would:-

Singh personal stress source inventory-

This inventory was developed by Dr. Arun Kumar Singh and Alpana Sen Gupta.
It consist of 35 items. Each item has to be answered as quickly as possible on
given three response options of each events namely, “Seldom”, “Sometimes”,
and “frequently”.

The scoring of SPSSI is very simple. Every item marked as


“seldom” by the testee is given a score of 1, marked as “sometimes” is given a
score of 2 and marked as “frequently” is given a score of 3. Every marked item
were added together to yield a total score. Qualitative description of the score
on SPSSI.

Research Design:-
Non experimental design were used.

Procedure of Data collection:-


The researcher will go different organization of
Bihar for the data collection and took permission from the head
of the institution. After taking permission, the process of data
collection was started. Firstly all the instructions were read out
to the subjects then they were requested to response in the
item as per to instruction. They would told their answer will be
kept confidential and it was only for the research purpose.
After the completion of both the questionnaire answer
sheet were collected from them. The response of the subject
were decoded and the scores were arranged in the data chart.
Statistical Analysis of Data:-
The obtained data will be analyzed by
depending upon the nature of data, suitable statistical analysis
will be applied.

Relevence and Utilities:-


The result of the study would be implementing
among the students in the schools focusing mainly the adolescence years. The
result would have in managing the stress among the students with a balance
with their psychological well-being through this the non-social behaviour
among the adolescence can be controlled & they can be made more responsible
as human beings.
