Name: Hanna Fisher

Date: March 31, 2020

Lesson Adapted From: https://www.legendsoflearning.com/learning-objectives/weathering-

and-erosion/

Intended Lesson Grade Level: 3-5

North Dakota Science Standard(s) Addressed: (NGSS Standards)

4-ESS2 Earth’s Systems

Topic: Weathering and Erosion

The Big Idea: The student will explain the effects of weathering and erosion

The Essential Question: What effect can wind and water have on the shaping of land?

The Performance Objective(s):

Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the
rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation.

Assessment of Objective(s) (Include a Rubric or a Scoring Guide):

Pre and post assessment: “Is it Erosion?” probe (see attached)
Assessment at end of lab/game

Lesson Materials:
o “Is it Erosion?” pre and post assessment
o “Is it Erosion?” assessment key
o Weathering and erosion Prezi https://prezi.com/view/4cJCzxFuxrqVj9VjzagF/
o YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IJHxQMnSGY

Lesson Structure/Procedures: All procedures are covered in the Prezi.

Engagement-
The students will take a pre-assessment “Is it Erosion?”
The teacher will share the Prezi presentation on weathering and erosion. The teacher will start
the Prezi by playing the YouTube video about weathering and erosion
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IJHxQMnSGY.
The students will read through the Prezi about weathering and erosion, then the teacher will
provide the answers to the pre-assessment.

Exploration- https://games.legendsoflearning.com/games/WyJnYW1lcyIsMTE5M10=
At the end of the Prezi presentation, there is a link to a game/lab. The students will get to play an
interactive game and learn about weathering and erosion. At the end of the lab, it asks questions
to see what the student learned throughout (this will not be graded). (Link above and in the Prezi)

Explanation- After the students finish the online lab, they will be able to choose either
weathering or erosion to create a poster or PowerPoint presentation on information about their
chosen topic with pictures. They will need to include at least five facts about the topic of their
choosing. They can either draw their pictures or find a picture online to show their type of
weathering or erosion. They will then record and present their topic to a family member and
share their presentation on google classroom. Once finished, they will take the post-assessment,
which is the same as their pre-assessment.

Modification and differentiation:

o Students working independently or in groups
o If students are working in groups, they can have a given role to work on for the project.
o PowerPoint or poster presentation
