I. Recipe Progression

Follow the recipe to make a delicious progression in four-voice harmony.

1. Start with either a voice exchange or parallel tenths.

2. Add a full helping of predominant. Use both IV and ii6. Remember, it tastes better
depending of which you add first!
3. Stir in a dominant for good measure. Add a pinch of dissonance by adding the seventh.
(Again, order matters. Which comes first, V or V7?)
4. Top it off with a Tonic chord. Garnish with a Perfect Authentic Cadence and serve
piping hot. (A Roman numeral analysis and a contextual analysis make excellent side
dishes.)

_____:

II. Matching progression

Match each measure description to the appropriate bass line and realize in four voices. Be
careful! Neither the descriptions, nor the chords in those descriptions are in order. Include
a Roman numeral analysis and a contextual analysis.

Measure A – Tonic chord Measure B – VI, i Measure C – V, iv

Measure D – iĹ, VI, V, iio6

Name________________________________________________

III. Figured bass

Realize the following figured bass in four voices. Provide a Roman numeral analysis with
a key label. Finally, provide a contextual analysis.

6 6 ě ě4 6 ě 7 6 ě
2 4

IV. Unfigured bass

The following bass is unfigured, but that does not mean that every bass note supports a
root position triad. As a helpful hint, the contents of each measure are described below,
but not in the correct order. Figure out which description goes with which measure and
then realize the unfigured bass in four voices. Provide a Roman numeral analysis with a
key label. Finally, provide a contextual analysis.

• A perfect authentic cadence with a 4-3 suspension.

• A voice exchange or a parallel tenths paradigm.
• A predominant, followed by a cadential six-four, followed by V7.
• The progression I, iił, Vŀ, I.
