Simple Practice Problems & Solution on Numbers

1. Is  3.14  a rational or irrational number?

Ans. Since it is a terminating decimal, it is a rational number.

2. Is    a rational or irrational number?

Ans: Since the square root of 36 is equal to 6 it is a rational number.

3. Is     a rational number?

Ans: Although it is a fraction, the numerator has π thereby making the numerator irrational. The
number π is a mathematical constant & is commonly approximated as 3.1415926535 (non-repeating
decimal). This decimal representation never ends & never settles into a permanent repeating pattern.

So the number mentioned in the question is not rational.

4. Identify an irrational number.

4
a. 9 b. √ 24 c. √ 169 d. 2.5

Ans: An irrrational number is a number which cannot be written as a quotient of two integers.

169 = 13 and 2.5 = 5 / 2

24 is not a perfect square, so 24 cannot be expressed as a quotient of two integers.

And 24 = 4.898979485566..., which is a non-terminating and non-repeating decimal.

So, 24 is an irrational number.

5. Which of the following numbers is irrational?
3
a. 14 b. √ 15 c. √ 81 d.3.63

ANS:
a. Since it is a fraction, it is a rational number
b. Since the square root of 15 is a non-terminating decimal, it is a irrational number
c. Square root of 81 is 9 (an integer) so it’s a rational number
d. It is a terminating decimal so it’s a rational number

So correct answer is option (b)

6. Which of the following is simultaneously a natural number, a whole
number, a rational number and an integer?
5
a. -13 b. -9.5 c. 7 d. √ 36

ANS: the positive integers (whole numbers) 1, 2, 3, etc., and sometimes zero as well are called
natural numbers.

- 13 is an integer, but not a natural number.

- 9.5 is a rational number, but not an integer.

5/7 is a rational number, but not an integer.

√ 36 =6 is a natural, a whole, a rational number and an integer.

7. Which of the following is a rational number and a real number at the
same time?
a. √ 45 b. 3.141296 c. √ 112 d. -54

Ans: A rational number is a number which can be written as a quotient of two

integers (i.e fraction), as a terminating decimal such as 0.2, 0.75 etc, or repeating
decimal such as 1/3=0.333333.

a. 45 is not a rational number as it cannot be written as a quotient of two

integers.
b. 3.141296.... is a non-terminating and a non-repeating decimal number, so it
is not a rational number.
c. 112 is not a rational number as it cannot be written as a quotient of two
integers.
d. - 54 is a rational number as it can be written as a quotient of two integers
that is – 54/1.

- 54 is also a real number as rational numbers are also real numbers.

- 54 is a rational and a real number.

8. Identify a true statement

a. All rational numbers are whole numbers.
b. All natural numbers are rational numbers.
c. All integers are irrational numbers.
d. All real numbers are integers.
Ans: Option b
