Patient
It happened stupidly, one week ago I was running under the rain I don’t know why I run
under the rain but I love it. So with this weather I slipped on a manhole cover. And when I
tried to get up I felt a big pain in my ankle and I could’nt run anymore because I was
limping and came back to my house. It’s the first time I have an injury and I don’t support
to be inactive, I do a lot of sport and seeing my ankle in this state of inflammation and
pain desperate me. I practice football 3 times a week and now I can’t.
Kiné
Since this injury, can you tell me what have you done to decrease your pain or to alleviate
it ? If there is positions which make you feel better ?
Patient
Since the day of the injury and I took anti-inflammatory drug and anti-pain auto-
medication and I put ice on my ankle to calm the inflammation. But it stills feeling painful,
so I came to see you.

Kiné
Can you describe your level of pain with this help of this scale ? I explain you, 0 is when
you feel perfectly normal, and 10 is when it’s unbearable.

Patient
It dépend of the moment when I sit on a chair or a sofa if I don’t move the pain is 2, when
I walk it’s 7 and during the night it arrived my anckle pain me with a pain of 3.

Kiné
Right, so we will proceed to the physical examination, follow me to the massage table
please. Do you need help ?

Patient
Yes please, it’s very painful puting my foot on the ground.

Kiné
Let’s see the level of mobility of your ankle and if it hurts too much tell me. [MOUVEMENT]

Patient
It hurts or not.

Kiné

Now, can you move yourself your ankle until it hurts ? [MOUVEMENT]
Patient
[MOVE AND SAY IF IT’S PAINFUL]
Kiné
Okay I see, I think it’s an ankle sprain.
Patient
So, what do you propose to cure me ?
Kiné
Well, I have two solutions for you according to your preferences.
Patient
Okay, explain me and we will choose together.
Kiné
The first treatment is with little mobilisations to avoid a certain atrophy of your muscle
and I can set up some reinforcement exercices with cords with handles, ankle weights, and
big plastic ball.
The other is an inmobilisation with massage and lympahtic drainage until the inflation
disapears so I think between 1-2 weeks and after you will begin reeducation.
You’ll use crutches in both case.
Patient
Wich treatment is gonna make me come back faster ? I want to be back on pitches as soon
as possible.
Kiné
If you want be back earlier you should be treated with the first option but I’ts a little more
painful and difficult. It takes more of your time because you have to come to see me 4
times a week.
Patient
And what are the advantages of the second one ?
Kiné
It’s less painful for you and you just have to come twice a week. This one is less traumatic.
But you’ll be back on pitch later.
Patient
Okay taking the pros and cons of each one, I’m gonna try the first one. I really need to
come back to sport fast, I can’t handle to stay immobilize so much time.
Kiné
Then we’ll begin tomorrow. When we end with this treatment you’ll buy an ankle brace to
protect your articulation a certain time.
